I've read all the reviews of the new dvd burners and just cant quite find the right one for burning dvd movies.
I was wondering which one would be the fastest at reading them to burn and how long does it usally take to burn a dvd movie from compressing to the actully burning thanks for your input.

Compression is driven solely by your CPU power, so what drive you use won't matter. For plain ripping with no compression, any drive that can read a video DVD at 16x or 12x will do. I use my LiteOn 1633 for ripping, but not for burning. What drive you use for burning is open to debate, but it really depends on what media you will be burning.

I use a Samsung 352B to read, and then use a Plextor 708A to burn. Plextor has the 712 SATA burner which according to reviews is an outstanding drive. I use DVD Dycrypter to rip the files, DVD Shrink to anyalze and compress, and Nero to burn. I have burned about 300 Ritek G 04 Silver Shinny with no problems; however; I just bought 100 Fuji Disc from Best Buy due to the recommendations on this site. I haven't had one problem burning with my Plextor 708A: It has been a high quality product for over a year now! Also, the Ritek G 04 DVD-R 4x that I have been buying have worked great: one coaster out of 300 disk and that was my fault!
Plextor is a premium product, so it will always cost a little more.

why are you using 3 steps for backing up a dvd when you only need to do 2?

just rip and encode with dvdshrink and burn with dvd decrypter, after you hit backup with dvdshrink its all hands off until the burn is done with dvd decrypter

also, premium in what sense? what single feature does a plextor dvd burner do that my pioneer doesn't?

I Have had problems with DVD Shrink ripping some of the files on my movie back-ups, so I have used DVD Dycrypter to rip them. Nero 6 also burns by default with DVD Shrink. I have time, so thats why I don't mind doing the extra step if I have to. I also burn at 4X, and I haven't had any failures. As for Plextor being a premium product, I believe the 708A has proven its reliability as well as its durability. I have read the many problems related to the Pioneer and Sony drives, and believe Plextor receives a higher amount for its products due the factors I described above. I originaly bought the 708A due to what I read at CDR Labs and CD Freaks and have not been disapointed!

Using two NEC 3500a with shrink,TY media, and nero without a hitch at 16x.

i won't argue there about sony drives

thats a good idea to get a great dvd reader and then the best dvd writer thats the best combo i think ill do that now i gotta chose which dvd burner writes the best.
