Not THAT impressive in my opinion. But with some firmware tuning it may turn out pretty good.

Well, 16x writing and 4x +R DL went wrong, but for the other discs, it's better than what i've seen by some other drives... besides that, 12x writing on 16x media is just as fast as 16x writing of other drives, so I could actually live with writing at 12x :)

Don't forget these are plextor 712 scans, so you should only compare them to other plextor 712 scans, especially not to LiteOn KProbe scans... I have actually never seen a DVD with less than 8000 PI total before, not with my drives at least (pioneer a08, lg 4120b, 4163b, plextor 712, nec 3500)

I know they can only be compared to plex 712A scans ;)

No problems - I've one here as well.

I was mainly referring to the 16x and DL burns when I said I was a bit un-impressed.

But it's a damn fast drive and looks good at slower speeds.

I've also made coasters already:
Ritek G05 @ 8x -> unscannable...
Optodisc 4x -R @ 4x -> unscannable...

But especially considering that it is the very first firmware, it's good imho: Just look at what other manufacturers (like Plextor) dare to launch :D

Also, when writing 8x media at 12x, it uses Z-CLV, but it already jumps to 12x at 1.6 GB! It sounds a bit like a helicopter...

does it also do ZCLV when writing at 12x to 16x media?

nope, it uses 7.3x - 12x PCAV then, also reaching 12x at 1.6 GB

that's very good to know!

i was sure it did 16x CAV but 12x and 8x ZCLV.
that's what was reported in some posts at cdfreaks forums...
or maybe i got cofused with the 4160B drive ?... :o

well 12x PCAV is very good. :D
is this DVD+R or -R or both ?

It does 16x P-CAV ;)
Image.
12x writing to 16x media looks just like that, with the only difference that acceleration stops at 12x ;)

And that is only for DVD+R: Unfortunately, the drive refuses to write even Taiyo Yuden 8x -R @ 12x, and I don't have 16x -R media, so I haven't been able to find out what the drive is doing at speeds higher than 8x with -R

thanks for clarifying that up.

interesting...
16x media at 12x - PCAV
8x media at 12x - ZCLV...!

BTW 8x media at 8x is ZCLV too, right?

Nope, but it starts at 6x and jumps to 8x at 200 (!!) MB

#-o LOL
i edited my post and you replied to the "original" one...got me confused.
the way it looks now is i say 'ZCLV' and you reply 'nope'.
sorry about that.

thanks again for the clarifications. :)

haha

let's summarize then:
16x @ 16x +R media: P-CAV
12x @ 16x +R media: P-CAV
12x, 16x @ 16x -R media: no idea
12x @ 8x media: Z-CLV
8x always Z-CLV

Hallo alexnoe,

i'v been looking at this drive for some weeks now. does it support bitsetting with original firmware (ie. without hacks)? :)

Thanks for the quick answer! Another question (forgot that one in the last posting): How capable is the drive of backing up protected media?

Review: http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/vi ... 29&id=1341

It doesn't look like the drive can write to a lot of media at 16x yet. Too bad too because it looks pretty impressive.

The writing quality looks pretty good too.. but then again all of Hardware Zone's scans look good for some reason.

More impressive than its 16x writing is its 12x writing on 16x verbatim media...

Ian,

But which drive can actually write at 16x without any issues? #-o

Sadly, none.

Fortunately, the LG 4163B is faster at 12x on 16x media than many other 16x drives at 16x.....
