I've got a Sony DW-U18A which seems to work fine for cd burning but screws up every time i burn a movie (i get pixellation, skipping or it just does nothing!)

I've tried dvdsanta, nero and dvdshrink (tried burning from 1x to 8x) A few discs works fine upto about 70minutes then start to mess up, i've tried different dvd players and tried playing them on my pc which seems to work slighty better but not much.

I've turned off all other apps while burning too.

Any suggestions as to fixes or am i stuck with a duff dvdrw? misaligned laser? Are there any diagnostic programs i can use to help?

Cheers,

Rob :)

Update your firmware and try a differant brand of media(pref. 'Made In Japan').

Also, check if DMA is enabled on your system, since without it, data is not fed fast enough to the recorder in order to burn in time.

I believe you have system hardware problem, this has nothing to do with upgrading your drive firmware. Check your hard drive may be is fragmented if so try to defrag your hard drive and make sure all of your hard drive and burner are in DMA position.

tried 2 types of media already, dma is enabled, HDD is defragged quite often (did it again just to test) but still does it :(

not quite the same i believe, it lets you convert a divx and let you burn it so thats quite handy!

Which OS and software are you using?

I was using W2K Pro SP3 when I got my new Sony DRU-710A and it came with Nero SE 6.3 Sony's edition and I could not burn DVD disc (it would hang at 10%), CDRs no problem, after talking with Sony' tech support, I was told I needed SP4 and Nero 6.6 and sure enough after SP4 and Nero 6.6, smooth sailing.......
