Slow NEC drives??

Hey everyone I'm back with another question but this time it is for someone else's drive.

My friend recently bought an NEC-3500AG off Newegg and my cousin bought a Mad Dog 16XDVD9 which is supposed to be a rebadged NEC. I'm posting this thread because both drives rip at incredibly slow rates. In DVD Shrink both their drives rip no faster than 2,700K/s.

Both the drives are on their own IDE cable in Ultra DMA Mode 2 and both are brand new, but why are they ripping so slow? I updated both drives to the latest firmwares available but I see no change. I was browsing on Google a few nights ago and read something about a "speed unlock" for NEC drives? Is there some sort of hack that needs to be applied so these drives will rip at full speed? Or is it something stupid built into the drive that makes it read at slow rates, (like my Plextor -708A's slow mode).

Any answers to this problem is appreciated.

yes you need a firmware with rip lock.

how would you go about getting this rip lock? i updated to the nec 2.18 firmware. the question that i have is that when copying a movie with Nero it takes 40 minutes to copy, from begining to end and ive read that some have copied 6 minutes.

You can get a "tweaked" version of the 2.18 firmware, here:

There is NO way that a full 4.7GB copy can be done in 6 minutes. Usually about 20+ minutes to rip and 6 to burn...that's it.

The stock firmware of NEC has Riplock, he needs modded f/w with Riplock Removed.

Ripping quality after removing riplock

Does Removing the Riplock degrade the quality of the ripping? I'm thinking of moving to Liggy's 2.18 with RPC1 and Riplock removed, but I'm wondering why NEC has not increased the ripping speed officially. That seems to be the only flaw with the NEC3500.

You can't degrade the quality. When its copying data, its just copying a bunch of 1s and 0s. So the copy that appears on your hard drive will be exactly the same. There's always the possibility of errors occurring during the copy, but would more likely be caused by problems with your cables or your hard drive. The speed at which you rip shouldn't affect it.

As for why NEC has a rip lock, many (if not most) drives do. Its done so as to not cause unnecessary noise when playing DVDs. And it may also have something to do with trying to appease the MPAA. ;)

Try to download the modded f/w which embedded in Binflash that would make easier to just open the Binflash and f/w will be flashed from their in to your writer. Select the Binflashed with f/w embedded from the following site:
