We are looking for an after christmas "deal" on a dvd recorder. I have found the LiteOn LV-W5001 discounted at circuit city for $199. I've read the reviews on here, and it seemed to be a good unit. Is there any other units you would recommend, in the same price range,,,$200-$250? I have a LiteOn 411s in my computer, and it has performed quite well for me. I was wondering about some of the Panasonic models, if they might be better? We just want to use it to record some VHS home movies we have over to DVD. No problem with "this" request, is there???????

Buy from NewEgg, they have the new model LVW-5005 for $232 pluss a couple dollars shipping, so THE PRICE IS THE SAME FOR THE NEW MODEL!! since you'll pay tax at CC. Don't buy that old model from C.C.

I recommend reading the recorder section on www.videohelp.com. The Lite-On has some quirks worth checking out to see how they affect you.

From my brief skimming over there many recommend the Pioneer units. Supposedly the Apex units have decent encoder chips and are cheap but they tend to blow out the PS at an unusual rate.

I have the JVC DR-M 10 and I recommend it. It is not the quietest, I think, but it offers great quality, nice design.

I love my LVW-5005. My only real complaint is that it doesn't use stereo when recording from the TV tuner. I have not heard if the LVW-5006 does though.

Well if there is a costco nearby, take the initiative and call. Otherwise you can probably order it via their website.

Costco sells all kinds of things that are not listed on their website. I have seen the same unit in mine in the Portland area on the west coast for the same price. If you afford the extra cash a unit with a hard drive will really be usefull. I have a Panasonic e80h and love it. The dvds in the 2 best settings turn out very nice and the HD can be used like a basic TIVO for time shifting and dubbing down your tapes and editing them.
Anyways if thats your budget go check your Costco if you have one near, that is a good price for one of those.

Checked with "New Egg" first, but they didnt have it in stock. Finally ordered it from "TheNerds" for $202 delivered price. No Costco around me,,there might be one in Wichita, about 60 miles away, but figured I would just go ahead and order online. Thanks for all your input, guys!

I have been looking into this model recently since it offers ON-SCREEN programming which is a MUST for me, in addition to 'Chase Play' and 'Record/Play.
Unfortunately, since the refurbished ones are out of stock and since there is a liquidation on LiteOn returns, costs more than double that of a special LiteOn only sold in one store that offer TV Guide Plus+ ON-SCREEN programming.

For the long run it would not be so bad to pay double for more features, but I have a feeling when HD recorders come around I'bb be selling this one...
In addition, I am not sure how often I'll be using those features personally.
I just want something to record the occasional TV show...

Yes, but it actually also uses DVD-RW, unlike ALL Panasonics and (most/some?) other JVC models.

I may get the LiteOn refurb/return/used (says used but I know they mean simply returns).
For about $100 + low shipping ($6 or so) + tax it probably can't be beaten, especially since it includes a free (no monthlt fee) EPG which many more expensive models don't even have!

Got to look into the 5010.

Thought I had one bought from the "nerds", but recieved an email the following day, that it was "out of stock", and rather than placing my order on backorder, they cancelled it, and credited my credit card. So now, Im back to square one,,,I did check back with newegg, and online, anyway, its supposedly in stock.

I have a JVC DRM10 and am very satisfied.
I just want to point out something that I see as important in a DVD Recorder. The ability to set recording time in small timesteps instead of just being able to set for whole hours.
As I understand it most recorders have only 1, 2, 4 and 6 hours.
JVC has a "FR" mode in which you can set it in 6 minutes steps.
In 2 hours mode the picture is perfect, when moving to 4 hours the picture is good but not as good as I want it. I use 3 hours 12 minutes and that picture looks to me as good as 2 hours.

If you look at the specifications of LVW-5005 you will see that 4 hour mode cuts down to 352X480 while 2 hours have 720X480 in NTSC.
I may be wrong here but I dont think LiteOn has this "FR" mode?

And the DVD-RAM ability is not to be overlooked.
