I'm having problems with blank DVD-R's

I have a liteon SOHW-1633S model, and I upgraded the firmware to the latest from www.liteonit.com... well, the problem is that it doesn't recognize the BENQ DVD-R 4.7 GB as a dvd. My computer keeps recognizing it as a blank CD.
when I try to burn 4 gb, it says there is not enough room (obviously), but I can't make it read as a normal DVD.
What do you think guys I should do?? I have searched information in many places, but I haven't found anything yet.
