The specs are ok, but not a hammer. I wonder why Pioneer have so low CD-R-speeds.

Because they care more about quality as speed. And it seems that you just couldn't wait one additional minute ?
Also pioneer targets there proudcts mostly at the higher consumer classes and low profesional classes.
Most of these folks in the profesional field won't burn faster as 20x because they have seen that in most cases after that you get significant quality differences. However I do have to say 0.1 our 1.0 average C1 on TY disc's are both nice but I still prefer 0.1 average (Based on Lite On 52327S ) even if that means I have to waite a additional 2 minutes.

Very interessing news! Any words when a drive for review will be sent to CDrLabs, if any at all?

Oh, we'll get one, but the way Pioneer America operates.. I wouldn't be surprised if shows up in March.

Is DVD-ROM booktype bitsetting possible with Pioneer drives yet? This was the main reason I stopped buying them because of the lack of bitsetting. Is this new one can do bitsetting they may get me back as long as their +R quality has caught up with their -R quality as well.

Booktype bitsetting is avaliable also for dual layer (drive set it automaticaly).

Now that is good news. Before I was to buy it though I would have to compare the scans from the BenQ 1620 with it to see how it fares especially with +Rs which I use a lot.

Hmmmm lets see now:

DVR-108 16X +- R 4X +- RW 4X +RDL

DVR-109 16X +- R 4X +- RW for now 4X + RDL 2X -RDL for now with "POSSIBLE" firmware upgrade in future to 6 or 8 on the RW and 6 on the Dual Layer.

Yes I can strongly see why one would throw away their DVR-107 or DVR-108 right now to get one of these puppies.

I am a bit dissapointed in Pioneer on this particular drive release. It sounds like nothing more than a DVR-108 upgrade rather than a new drive. Why not wait a bit and give it a real upgrade ( Blue Ray ?? HD-DVD ?? 8X dual layer ).

Ok, you've missed a couple important points here....

#1: it's 4x DVD±R9 recording, not 4x DVD+R9 and 2x DVD-R9.
#2: it's 16x DVD±R recording using CAV, *NOT* Z-CLV, which means it's faster, and easier on the drive
#3: 6x DVD±R9 recording will be added, probably before there is any media to even support it.

This drive is actually quite awesome, and if you expected to get anything more then what is being offered, I'm a little curious to find out what you actually expected?

DVD-RAM writing would've been nice. ;)

Can you explain ?

All the stopping and starting of the motor while the speed is being bumped up. I've always understood that starting and stopping a motor repeatefly is a bad idea.... of course OPC technology is similar to this anyways :P

Yes start-ups are more stressing the motor. Hmm forgot that one.

The way I understand it is that the writing process (transfer of data) is paused.. the disc doesn't stop spinning or change speeds.

That makes sense, I don't hear it spinning up and down like I do with Z-CLV.

just the constant writing speed of cav alone makes the burn quality better

or always in theory better, so i say hell yes to CAV in the 109

ive got the screwdriver to my 108 already, ready to come out of my case

trust me i tried putting thumbscrews in my optical drives they just dont go in

but i do have em in my hard drives, brings the total of thumbscrews in my computer to 38

You don´t know me, the writing quality is very important for me :)

But I had the Pioneer DVR 107 and have actually the LG 4082. Both have a CD-R-writing speed of 24x and I can say that the writing quality is not better as my MSI CR52-A2 at 48x/52x ;)

Constant Angular Velocity, not constant writing speed.

At any rate, this drive might find it's way into my case.

Well, it's pretty hard for it to be worse. Would have been nice if Pioneer had thrown in an 8MB Buffer like Plextor though, :(

the motor spinds down (and then up) when changing a zone in ZCLV ??? that makes no sense! it should spin UP.
(except of course when it slows down due to bad media etc.).

Take a look at any data disc graph done by CD/DVD Speed using a Z-CLV writing method. It clearly shows the drive stops, then kicks into the next gear as it were.

The Z-CLV graphs are a little misleading. The dips aren't really the drive slowing down.. it's just where the data transfer has stopped.

Be interesting to see if they still have the rip lock in place in the new drive. Nope its not. Thats why i bought the A08 because of being able to rip @ 12 speeds verses the 5X or whatever it is on the 108 oem drive without hacked firmware.
