px-716 TLA# 0203/plus a new review

I haven't read about TLA #0203 yet.

Also, there's a review using firmware 1.03 and TLA#0202 here:

http://www.dvdwriters.co.uk/reviews/ple ... 716ap1.htm

Would be nice to see a review with TLA# 0203 and the (currently beta) 1.04 firmware.

I would also like to see a head-to-head comparison with the LG-4163 (obviously plex doesn't do dvd-ram).

Those are some horrible DVD read graphs. I dunno what the reviewer is doing. No 16x -R tests either. :x

As far as the new TLA.. its the same drive as those with 0202 but with the 1.03 firmware. You're not going to see anything different. Also, the 1.04 firmware is in beta. The only new feature is support for DVD-R DL.. and then most of the other features (Gigarec, etc) have been disabled. Doing a review with this firmware is a waste of time IMO.

O.K, thanks. I wasn't aware of that. Thought it was yet another hardware revision. Thank you for the clarification.

Yeah, I wasn't overly impressed with the review.

Also, Cdfreaks is supposed to have a review posted by this weekend.

Also, the 1.04 firmware is in beta.

Yeah, I mentioned that in my original post. I meant when it goes final in mid-January . . .

It's just the drive revision. The first two numbers are the hardware revision.. the last two are the firmware version that shipped on the drive. For example a TLA of 0203 would mean that its the second hardware revision and it came with firmware 1.03.

As far as reviews go.. I'm hoping whoever has some 8x +RW tests. No one seems to have it here in the States.. including Plextor... at least they're not giving it out to reviewers. #-o

Cdfreaks' Px-716 review will include the tests with DVD+RW at 8x and DVD-RW at 4x. "OC-Freak" just got the media in yesterday and should be running the tests today. The review should be posted this weekend, according to this thread:

If plextor ever gets this drive running right I would want to pick one up. Is their any way to tell from the box which hardware version it is?

Yes, the TLA# is printed on a little sticker on the top of the box.

I agree with the conclusion....this drive has promise. After a firmware revision or two it might be worth the price.......

Just laughed hard when I saw the performance on MCC 8x DVD+RW.
I allready had expected this that it was just a hollow claime at the time that it was released and that the drive at this time isn't cappable of burning the media.
In other words Plextor just put it on the box/site in the begining for marketing reasons. Why it would be just added with a new firmware which makes you think.
If they did announce this one directly and had to add it later why don't do the same with 6x DVD+R DL ?
Also this gives hope for 16x burning with powerrec. It might be added later.

At least they added 4x recording support for 6x DVD-RWs

Hmm that's very easy. Infact if plextor has a decent rewritable generic strategy for 4x then it should have worked.
Ohh but then again. We're talking about plextor so your right.
