I just got a new notebook, the Averatec 3250HX. It features a QSI sdw-082s DVD+/-RW drive. I can't find a firmware upgrade anywhere for this drive. QSI simply states they don't release firmware to end users. BTW, the drive is pretty good so far. Any thoughts appreciated.

Hello!

QSI has one of the worst FW-support. A friend have an Averatec-Notebook with the QSI 042. ThereĀ“s also no update avaible and it burns in bad quality with most media. The Verbatim DVD-R 8x it only burns at 2x

Thanks for relaying your friend's experience. I will say that so far it seems to both extract and burn cd audio quite well. I haven't explored its dvd writing functions yet.

Just when I was getting frustrated that the QSI drive didn't have an update, I experienced a catastrophic Windows failure for the computer. I exchanged the computer at Circuit City. Interestingly, the new 3250HX features a LiteOn 852S drive. Dual layer capable according to DVD Info! I think the windows crash may have been a blessing in disguise.
