LG 4082 won't write at 8x

Drive is LG GSA-4082B with A208 firmware.
Disc is RITEKG05, DVD-R
Nero InfoTool shows that it's supported speeds are 4x-8x, and I've tried using both Alcohol 120% and Nero 6 to burn these discs, but the maximum speed i get is 4x.
I've made sure buffer was sufficient, with different hard drives feeding info to the burner, but it never gets past 4x.
I can't find any new firmware, so is there another program i can use that will support burning at 8x??
