LG GWA-4161B and DVD-RAM
Posted: Sat Jan 15, 2005 1:04 pmAlright, so a couple of weeks back, my LG GSA-4081B started flipping out on me. I still had warranty on it, so I took it back, and asked them to replace it. So what happens? The 4081B is an old drive and they are out of stock, so they give me one of the newer ones. But they aren't stupid, they won't just give me a more expensive drive for free, if they don't have to.
So they give be the GWA-4161B, which is basically a cut-down version of the 416x series, in the sense that it doesn't support DVD-RAM, neither write nor read.
So what I was thinking is this: Can DVD-RAM support, in principle, be added via firmware? I think I saw a discussion on it once, but I don't remember the conclusions.
Strictly speaking DVD-RAM is not crucial to me now. It's not as hot stuff as I thought it might turn out to be - media is rare and expensive, and since most readers available now don't support it anyway, its only use is basically for personal backups, and for that simple RW disks can do the job just fine.
So I'm just talking from an enthusiast point of view. Can it be done? Considering the fact that we're talking about basically the same drive (or so it seems), it might just be possible. Or am I wrong?
