Ok....have 2 burners in 5.25 bays...both are top two positions on ide cable..all cable select on xp pro...all perfect burns...no I got for free one of those 5.25" rack adapters so I just hot swap hard drives...I put this into the stop slot where one burner was (top spot on IDE cable)....when I put the HD in all burns were aweful...buffer issues and slow burns. Nero said drive was in use on ATAPI???

So I pull the HD out and reboot...all is ok....why does this occur with the HD plugged in as described? should the burner be in the 1st place in the cable?

why must people use cable select, its not that hard to move a jumper right?

1. How many devices are on your machine?

2. Are the writers and the HD on the same cable? You might want to put both writers on a different controler, it will run faster. IDE can only do one thing at a time on one controler so if you're going from DVD to HD it has to read, then write. If there were on sperate controlers (i.e. IDE0 and IDE1 as labeled on the MB) the computer would be able to read from the DVD and write to the hard drive in one step.

3. Physical position on the cable shouldn't matter.

Good question in 10 years I've never used it. I always felt safer with master/slave.

if i found cable select on a computer i had someone build me i wouldn't be impressed

just shows their intelligence on computer building

again i raise the question is it that hard to move a jumper?

It's not a matter of being hard. Just one less thing to have to think about. Humans have too much to keep on their minds as is.

That's why I like the idea of SATA! No jumpers to move!
