I like speed but NOT at the expense of write quality!

Then again, seeing as I purchased two 716s, I may be lying :P

Well I was about to retire my 106 for the 109 today but I see no point to spend the money yet as I have the 107 and 108 already. Newegg has the same specs for the 109 listed as the 108. I am still happy burning my Longtens at 4X in the 106 and my TY's(yes I switched for personal use finally) in the 107 and 108. I just need to get gentoo to see my Pioneers on the SATA bus they are on at the moment. Mandrake 10.1 doesnt see them either :( Even after a recompile with SATA support but anyway firewire still works fine so I will put them back as I am NOT using windows ever again. I guess I will wait for the Pioneer 110? #-o

I stopped having faith in Pioneer with the DVR-107 removed support for Optodisc 4x DVD-Rs

I have NOT been impressed with the DVR-108 really, and I'm not liking what I see about the DVR-109.... but that doesn't mean I won't buy one.

Why are people here and at cdfreaks, so hard on the Dvr-109? It just came out. It has good writing quality even though it's not the fastest burner. I'm sure it will get better with firmware updates. I think it will be an awesome drive. Isn't it about the write quality and not speed?

I still think people are forgetting about the write quality and look at the speed. It's not how fast something gets done, but how well it gets done.

Just my 2 cents :)

Someone posted a new scan here and it was a really awesome scan. The write quality is good.

The Pioneer Dvr-109 has now showed up on the Pioneer Europe page.
http://www.pioneer-eur.com/eur/product_ ... y_id=43-92

It shows CAV for 16x, PCAV for 12x, and PCAV for 8x for Dvd -R and +R.

I agree about the write quality being important. I think expectations are higher for this drive than most others so it is easier to disappoint people. While it really doesn't do much for me, I've accepted that there are many others out there who rank overspeeding 8X media to 16X (not just 12X) and finishing a burn 45 secs quicker (CAV), ect. high on their list. To me those are nice additions once you achieve excellent burn quality at a media's rated speed.

Jim,

Thank you for replying. I was hoping to hear from someone on this.

I'm glad that you agree that the write quality is important. I think you may be right about expectations being high, and some people might get disappointed easily. I try to make sure I never set high expectations for any drive. That way, I will never be disappointed. My expectations are always are for the drive to have great write quality at the maximum media's rated speed. If the disc is an 8x disc, I expect it to burn well at 8x. Anything higher is a bonus.

I totally agree with your last sentence.

Personally I don't see the big deal about the 109. I've compared DVD-R scans between the 109 and the BenQ 1620 and if anything the BenQ burns -R as good as or better than the Pioneer. I won't bother to mention +R.

At the rate of the new firmware updates being released you'd be hard pressed to complete the review before the firmware was updated.

I'd love to, but I'd need Pioneer to send me one... which if history repeats itself, won't be until March.

DVD-R DL I guess would more interest my son for certain reasons but not me although he'll probably bug me about it for these certain reasons. 6x DVD+R DL is no big deal to me. 4x suits me fine. My quest is for near perfect burns and great compatibility with standalones.
