So everytime you upgrade your firmware, you need to waste a bunch more discs getting your drive to burn them properly again?

Now *THAT'S* the Plextor promise of quality!

It's not that bad if Plextor adds support for them. Looking at the new supported media lists, a lot of the AutoStrategy media is now listed under supported. Ritek 8x -R media is still listed under the AutoStrategy list though.. not that I got it to work with firmware 1.03 though.

I noticed that it was also listed under "Compatible DVD-R."

That's easy! Now it supports Ritek DVD-R9 instead of ONLY Mitsubishi Chemicals DVD-R9 media

(that's a guess by the way)

Weird.. it could be due to the varying quality of Ritek's media.

Hopefully, it will get better results with ProdiscF01!

I doubt that's possible... I don't know a single burner to get good results with the PRODISCF01 media I have. It's aweful stuff!

Well, after running some Q-Check TA Tests, the results are now "very good" as opposed to "bad" on this media.

I'll run some more tests...

Dolph can fill you in on the technical specs but this media code is typically found on Memorex 8x DVD-Rs.

Actually, "Dolph" will have to call in a few favours to get any info on the technical specs.

But I can tell you this:

Prodisc has 4 8x DVD-R codes currently. PRODISCS04, PRODISCF01, MCC 02RG20, and FUJIFILM03. Of the 4, I think PRODISCS04 works the best. Even Prodisc is aware of the flaws in their PRODISCF01 media. Last I heard, all Prodisc 8x DVD-R SHOULD be moving to MCC 02RG20 code soon, and the other three codes will be phased out.

Some people find the MCC 02RG20 code works really well, some people think it's the worst of the 4. Personally, I just don't like Prodisc, and have found the variations in their quality to be too big to warrant serious use.

I actually know a couple companies who are completely dropping their Prodisc media and picking up Optodisc to replace it, simply because they are sick of the problems caused by Prodisc's 4 8x DVD-R codes.

Also, as it stands, when you order Prodisc 8x DVD-Rs from Prodisc... you could get ANY of the codes, or a mixed shipment even! :o

Had only Memorerx DVD-R 4x, they are from CMC

Maybe in America Memorex uses other manufacturers

Dolph -

What has your experience been with ProdiscS04?

Thanks!

Argh, ProdiscF01 is the stuff that I paid $40+ shipping for (and am waiting on a rebate for)with that recent PCConnection deal. :| I guess you're implying it's a bad idea to even backup data (mp3) on these? #-o I've done one burn on the 3500, and playback has been fine thus far. CD Speed doesn't find any errors, but I don't have the right hardware to complete a more extensive error test.

I'm not sure of that one. Infact there is info pointing to the opposite.
However the answer about codes seems to be more complicated I have a very good theory what's really going on. However at this point it's still partially unconfirmed.
Last I heard, all Prodisc 8x DVD-R SHOULD be moving to MCC 02RG20 code soon, and the other three codes will be phased out.

Hmm I have some doubts since it would mean Prodisc lost/looses a very big customer.

Maybe people are expecting to much ?

This may be of interest since the fw is officially out now.

There's a short note (just text, no scans) in the latest c't (3/05) about burning DL @6x (as also discussed here). The time drops to ca. 23 min from 28 (4x). The PX 716A with Fw 1.04 apparently showed good quality with Verbatim (MCC) media. The other drive they mentioned (Samsung TS-H552U, Fw US03) produced very high error levels @6x.
