Looking at I-O Data's spec page on the drive, it truly is a Panasonic/Matsushita drive (SW-9585).

According to the original source it says "SW-9585 of Matsushita electronic industry make":

More info on the drive:

The external looks pretty cool

That's I-O Data's standard external case. I do agree it looks quite nice. I-O Data needs to release some of these drives in the US

They probably can't compete. Too many el-cheapo drives sold over here.

I-O Data is hardcore, it even breaks down the naming convention for the drive:

DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM ATAPI対応 Drive Bay用
MATSUSHITA16倍速ライト Advance (BLACK)

So is this yet another awesome sounding Panasonic drive we'll never see in the US, or if we're lucky one obscure site will carry it for about a week before it goes out of stock?

I wish Plextor released the 605 in the US...

That IOData external drive does look awesome, maybe I need to break down and ask my friend in Japan to get me one.. :)

Does the SW-9585 accept cartridges? I have a lot of DVD-RAMs in cartridges...

Anyone know if the SW-9585 will be available in the US?

IO Data's site specifically says it won't work with DVD-RAM in cartridges.

YSS has put up a barrage of tests with this drive; it's not looking too hot so far: http://homepage2.nifty.com/yss/sw9585/sw9585.htm

looks like it lists 12X for the DVD media he inserts. Someone want to translate? Also, this drive is the latest and greatest at http://www.slidirect.com/They sell direct to OEM's, resellers AND end users! Just ordered my black bezel one! The 9585 is on the homepage. in "product spotlight"

In this thread the reports about the Plextor PX-605 dont look very good ...

According to this news
there may be more DVD-RAM burners coming ahead ...

Thats tempting but I all ready have 2 16x DL burners now plus 2 more 8x ones and a nifty Panasonic Settop HD/dvd burner that will take RAM disk in either flavor and minus. Let us know how it works when you get it and maybe I'll change my mind if its very good.
