i bought 5- 15 packs of maxell 8x DVD-R for $4.20each plus tax at staples. when i saw made in japan, i thought i was getting TY's but when i got home, i opened one pack and found out that they were MXL RG03. i am not sure if i should take them back and look for 4X MAXELL that are for sure TY's. does anyone have kprobe/ or any scans of this media?

4x Maxel are not for sure TY, they are for sure Maxell RG02.
Both are excellent discs in most drives, better than TY in a few drives.

I've always been happy with Maxell manufactured media. It used to be hard to find, so I didn't use it as much as I'd like. Here's a disc burned at 8x on a PX-716A with the 1.04 firmware:

As you can see, the writing quality is pretty good. I just wish the drive could write to it at say 16x like the Pioneer and NEC drives.

Maxell DVD-R media tends to work best when not overclocked I've found. But when burned at its' rated speed, they tend to be QUITE good quality

I got a Nec 3500a with a spindle of Maxell DVD-R 8x like you. How can i burn those media at 16x speed like you?

Thx in advance for help.

I had juwel cased media. With Firmware 2.18, it recognised them as 16x compatible and wrote them in ~5m40s

The 4X Maxell Made in Japan spindles can be both TY and MXLRG02. If Made in Taiwan they are RitekG04.

Sorry if that's what you meant. It looks to me, as it is written, you are stating all MIJ 4X DVD-R is RG02.

I had a portable dvd player, and wanted to burn movies Ffor travelling) I tried Everything (almost) in disk names, and none worked. Then I got my hands on some Apple dvd-r's and they worked perfectly on all drives! I downloaded a small program called "dvd identifier" (I really wanted to know who manufactured these disks for Apple (as they are expensive) and it turns out to be made by Maxell (ID: MXL RG02) Son of a gun!The company is now called Hitachi Maxell LTD. Now all I have to do is see if they're cheaper!
