Are the Maxell 15 packs of Dvd-Rw at Office Depot any good? Does anyone know who makes them, and what speed they are?

I have never bought a pack of Dvd-Rw's in my life. I have no idea who makes good ones. I only know about Dvd-R and Dvd+R media

Could you guys tell me who makes the best Dvd-Rw's? Please list brand, media id, and speed if possible.

I'm going to use them in a Pioneer home dvd recorder.

The last Maxell DVD-RWs i've seen were made by mitsubishi

I just bought 2 spindles of the Maxell DVD-RW 15 packs from Office Depot the media code is MCC 01RW11n9. I bought it to use with a Pioneer 220 Dvd Recorder that I'll be purchasing. Is this media any good?

Good: MCC(and all there partners usseing there mid as long as it's big branded stuff.), JVC/VICTOR, TDK
Okay: RICOHJPN (RITEK), PHILIPS (Mostly CMC but also other third parties.)

All the rest is not that great(That last part was missing . Geez I really should check what I post these day.) except for some japanese brands (like Pioneer !) which do not longer make any media or don't have any oem's running for them longer.

Optodisc and CMC (OWN code version) and Ritek seem to inconsistant to me.

Is dvd-rw dieing or something? I never really see much of it. I think the Maxell dvd-rw discs at Office Depot is 2x. Does anyone make 4x dvd-rw? Also, why doesn't Taiyo Yuden or Maxell make any dvd-rw?

I have seen more dvd+rw than dvd-rw. I just thought it was strange.

Every better shop has Verbatim 4x -RW media here ( www.alternate.de , www.pcanymore.de , www.planet-elektronik.de , www.amazon.de ...)

Don't forget RITEKW04 (4x DVD-RW).
Those discs perform quite well on a range of drives for me.

Optodisc also has some DVD-RW but they are not so great IMO.

I think part of this may be historical- if you recall, the +format was initially only +RW with +R being added later (there was quite a ruckus because some burners weren't capable of writing one-time discs, even after firmware updates). This is probably why all +media have an RW on the packaging. The dash-rewritables came later, so the +rewritables just have a head start.

That's because you don't have any good ones

Don't forget Optodisc's 4x DVD-RWs are actually Pioneer Certified... and Ritek's are barely *Ritek* certified Actually, I have not been impressed with Ritek's 4x DVD-RWs... there support in the beginning was about as bad as their dual layer! Still, I've seen worse (Melody brand CMC!!)

The one and only Optodisc 1x -RW i had wasn't even recognised as being round by some reading devices, especially picky ones. The same devices had no issue with Verbatim 1x -RWs... we all know that Pioneer sold the 2x speed -R certification on 1x discs (their FAQ said it, though not the european one), and no one knows what other certifications they give out for money

I bought some today to use in my Sanyo DRW-1000. I haven't tried them yet but I did take a look at one in DVDINFOPRO.

Sorry for spreading misinformation. That was my perception- but you've been around this game a lot longer than I have. Fact is though, that +RW came before +R.

Yup. BTW, this very first DVD-RW was a Pioneer 1x speed DVD-RW, which was 20€ A little later, the (higher quality) Verbatim DVD-RWs showed up at ~25€. I was very lucky and got a 5pack on ebay for 70€

Even the shitty LG 12x DVD-ROMs were able to read the Verbatim disc

DVD+RW was faster though, their first discs were 2.4x speed, and they had that speed shortly before DVD-RW reached 2x. I can tell you, 1x speed writing was boring

Dreamt is incorrect. Since I have seen some quite old articles mentioning DVD+RW technology befor DVD-RW was released. Still it wasn't named +RW at that time if I'm right.
Better say something like DVD-RW was allready for some time on the market when the first +RW drives/discs arrived.


About Optodisc/CMC/RITEK and other codes there crap or to unreliable.
Only nice rewritable Optodisc makes are the small ones. Which doesn't seem to have huge variances like the normal media has but then again some stores really like to overprice these.

I don't know... the super expensive MAM-A/MAM-E Optodisc made DVD+RWs are pretty good

But yeah, Optodisc's Mini DVD-RWs are incredibly good. Also the only DVDR or DVDRW I've ever seen with a zero percent return rate
