DRU710a firmware BYX2 - It's back?

I noticed today that Sony put the BYX2 FW back on the US site. Not sure what that is all about since they recommended that I go back to BY02 a few weeks ago.

I am a little hesitant to do the upgrade again after my last experience.

Anyone know what the scoop is?

I have some very bad writing results using Sony 8x DVD-R. I have my results posted in the thread about the DRU-710a Review done by Ian here in CDRLabs.

Right after I updated to BYX2 they pulled it from the US website although it was still available in Europe and Australia. I spoke to a someone at Sony that was very helpful after getting a few clueless front line pat answers and they told me they had a few problems (?) and it would be better if I went back to BY02 and do not use Sony media :o

I think your drive is the same except in the external case so the same rules probably apply.

I did switch to Verbatim 8x media and it is working very well with the BY02. I am considering changing back to BYX2 wondering it the original media I used was at least part of the problem.

I think you already have what I am calling the "old" FW which is BY02.

Here is the link to your burner with the new FW BYX2 plus looks like you have a USB update as well. FW download is at the bottom.

Here is the BY02 FW as well.

The BYX2 was definitely faster FW than the BY02 when I ran it, but as I said quality was questionable with Sony Media at least.

Something is definitely not quite right if you are running that slow. Have you been able to test on a second computer just to eliminate a config or driver problem? That would be the quickest to determine if it is the drive or not.

Not sure what else to suggest since mine is internal.

Just noticed this myself as well. I actually never switched from BYX2 back to BY02, but I did download an retain the exe files for both firmwares.

As far as I can tell, this BYX2 is identical to the previous one, exact same size and all. Which makes me wonder what the problems were, and what if anything, was 'fixed'.

And for newbfh, I had speed issues with the Sony DRU710a until someone here pointed out that I had not set the computer IDE channels to DMA. Check in control panel -> system -> device manager -> IDE channels that both primary and secondary are set to DMA if available (should both be ultra DMA). Once I corrected this, the burn speeds went right up (before I could not exceed 2x, regardless of what speed was selected)

I was going to suggest that as well but newbfh has the UL version so it is external Firewire and USB I think. Could also be the USB drivers but firewire test should have narrowed that down.
