My new NEC 3520 only gets around 4 X when ripping a dvd to the hard drive and I was wondering if this is a normal. Would a regular 16X DVD ROM rip DVDs any faster? I'm using Smartripper to rip the dvds. Thanks.

You need a riplock removed version of the 3500 firmware, go to http://tdb.rpc1.org and take your pick.

NEC writers are locked at 4x,you need to use a hacked firmware or buy a DVD-ROM.

You will need bin flash for windows and you are ready to go.

BINFLASH wipes your FW clean and allows cheese and anything else to be inserted.

Well, I flashed the drive and am testing now. Would a 16X DVD Rom drive actually rip a dvd at or near 16X? If so, is there a prefered brand to use? Thanks.

single layer rips at 16x towards the end

I just finished testing the flashed drive and the highest speed it got was 6.2X but then it suddenly dropped back down. I'm thinking a 16X DVD Rom would be much faster, even if it only read the data at 12X. Is anyone using a 16X to read their DVDs when they are backing them up? Thanks.

6.2x is about right to read a DL disk! Yes there are faster ones out there. I asked the same question a while back and decided to go with two 16X burners. 8x is about max for any DL. Single layer can only read 16X on a perfect day.

im using my hacked litey drive that is in my sig, and yes its full 16x on single layer

and ive never tested the rip speed of DL movies with dvd decrypter, but i can if you want me to

they should add that to dvdshrink, a rip speed read out while its ripping

How do I know if I'm ripping a dvd that's DL? Can I assume most movies on DVD for sale are DL?

to know for sure you can use dvd decrypter to check, but if its over 4.3GB or whatever it is then yes its DL

ripping speed on NEC 3500 (or any writer) depends to :

1) The Disk is D/L or S/L?.

2) The Disk is protected disc or unprotected?.

3) The disk being ripped from protected video disk has to be shrink or just ripped or has to be encoded also?.

4) Also depends the Video movie that being ripped how the recording was formated or on what polatform?.

5) Finally the quality of video disk you are trying to rip?.
