Does your burning software affect burn speed?

I'm using the Nero OEM that came with my drive and was wondering if the software used makes a difference in burn time? I applied the 63125 update from the nero website and to burn a DVD takes 9:40 for both the Sony and Memorex media I bought at Best Buy. Media is rated for 8X but unless I'm mistaken, it shouldn't take that long, right? The amount of data, 2 MPEGs, is 4.37 GB so the disc wasn't even filled. Can anyone advise me? Thanks.

9:40 sounds about right for an 8X burn.. 4.37GB is nearly a full disc. The burn software shouldn't normally make a difference, but you can try RecordNow Max or some other software and check.

if you use the nero realspeed reg edit you can see the exact burn speed, or dvd decrypter will tell you as well

i think record it now tells you the exact burn speed too, been a long time since i used it though

I just checked the review for the 3500 and Memorex media was listed at 9:10 for 4GB of data so I guess the performance is in line. I'll be checking Office Depot for some Maxell DVD-R which did the burn in 5:32. Big difference in my book but is there any word on Maxell quality?

I got few pack of those Maxell 4X(DVD+R/-R) 3 week ago from Office Depot when they were on sale, both can be burned at 12X or some times at 16X with modded f/w of NEC 3500.

I am not one of those who is being fascinated with these questionable, fancy wording of testing for PIE/PIF, ...and so on, when I burn a disk data or video do random testing with Nero DVD Speed Scan Disc and if is fine and the disc plays OK in my DVD stand alone player then that is considered fine burring for me.
