I still have time to take back my Sony DRU-710A that I bought at Best Buy here in Denver Colorado.

I don't know if it's the burner or the "DVD Cloner II" software that I'm using that is causing the occasional glitches (video freezes for a split second every now and then) in my DVD copies. Is this caused from data errors?

Anyway, I was wondering what people here at this forum thought was the best DVD burner available here in the states.

I just picked up the PX-716A and moved my DRU-710A off to another computer. The jury is still out for me with the new drive but my first 2 discs were good.

I purchased the PX-716A based on this forum and some other online reviews.

I still have hope they will get the firmware straighten out on the 710A since Sony has never let me down before. I found the key to that drive for the 2 months I have had it is using Verbatim and Maxell DVD-R 8x and just about any +RW or -RW (Verbatim, Sony, Memorex, Phillips).

I orignally bought the drive to create DVDs of my precious home movies and I just did not feel comfortable with the results and reviews of others. I am convinced it can mostly be solved in firmware if Sony will get on it.

Maybe the problem is with the media. The first batch of DVD+R discs I used were Memorex. I don't think I noticed a problem until I started using the Sony discs (which were more expensive).

If you search around you will see I first started with the Sony discs (Taiwan) they were horrible. I spoke to someone at Sony about the FW bouncing around on the US website and the bad burn with Sony media and they suggested Verbatim instead .

I actually have had some pretty good burns with the DVD-R 8x and BY02 FW. Have not retried the BYX2 yet. I got a great discount on this drive and with a $50 rebate is was only about $60 dollars. I am happy to use it for 8x Max and hope they work on the firmware.

I can usually get a pretty good deal on Verbatim at the local Sam's Club at 0.40 each.

nevertheless, please consider Pioneer A09, hell of a burner!

I can only add Benq or Philips because there walking OPC and the fact that they use more ADIP data as MID have proven themselves really unlike other techniques which just seem to be nice thoughts of the marketing department.
But NEC does a good job keeping up. So if you don't like Nexperia chipset or you more interested in -R media only then the NEC might probally the best options out there. (Unless plextor does another huge improvement with it's firmware that is.)

BenQ DW1620 $52 shipped from NewEgg. Can't beat the price for one of the best burners out there. It also allows you to do quailty scanning which will help you identify possible freezing problems with bad media etc, although if you buy quality + or - media you find that you'll like get 95% or better quality score scans. Also does booksetting to DVD-ROM and overspeeds a lot of media,

How about the LG GSA-4163B. It seems to have a lot to offer, including burning to all formats?

Well the LG with current firmware is kind of rough on quite some media.
(To high jitter and Beta)
It has some good potential however I rather would suggest something that is allready working as something that might be.
