LG GSA-4163B - I'm not sure it supports dual layer.

What's wrong with the NEC btw?

the LG writes to DVD-RAM
the NEC will have DVD-R DL (and maybe faster DVD+R DL?)
the NEC usually has hacked firmwares for various stuff (overspeeding media)
take your pick

The toshiba writes a full DVD at 5:32 and has some nice scans as indicated in this thread. Looks like a promising new burner.

I guess you can add the Asus 1608P to that list? Similar specs as a Pioneer. Not sure who makes it!

Get the 109 if you get a Pio!

previous Asus DVD burners were based on Pioneer drives. so my guess is that the 1608 is based on the Pioneer 109.

HI!

If you want DVD-R I vote for a Pioneer 108/109 or LG 4163. I guess this writer´s are good readers, too. Better than Benq or NEC. I have very good experinces with LG and Pioneer

If you want to burn more DVD+R I vote for a Benq or NEC.

I've some pretty good - scans come out of a BenQ.

LG's firmware is way to rough.
So if it's NEC vs LG then NEC.
If you take however Benq 1620 pro also into account then it will be a tough choice.

NEC
+ great community
+ better on -R
+ Support for Dual Layer -R

Benq/Philips
+ WOPC
+ Better technology for writing strategy
+ better firmware support from the companny
+ Drive can be used as tester (Errors + jitter)
+ Better on +R media

Hmm tough choice I probally would choose the Benq because I use +R more and I like the testing options.
But I can perfectly understand if someone will use the NEC. Better -R and support for dual layer -R are nice options.
But with both the NEC and the Benq you will have a good drive.

LG is only a option this time if you
A want DVD-RAM for some reason.
B just want a fast drive and don't care about the actuall writing quality
C You just have good fate that LG will fix most jitter and BETA issues with the next firmware(s)

Best reader for poor dvd recordables is PIoneer !!

Toshiba also has quite some issues with current firmware when it comes to writing quality. THen again it's also TOshiba the companny that sold a 4x slimline burner that didn't support 8x media and when asked Toshiba said buy a new drive, which seems to me that they don't take customers serious and just want to earn money !

Hello!

I say Pioneer or LG. With 16x the Pioneer is the better burner, the LG is not the best at it´s highest speed.

Pioneer A08 = Pioneer 108 ?

And why do they cost much more? do they have any special abilities?

The A08 is a little different. It has a different kernel allowing faster DVD-Video read speeds and the ability to slow the drive down to make it quieter. The A08 also has that funky honecomb design to reduce vibration. Oh yeah.. the bezel is different too.
