Any way to waterproof inkjet printable DVDRs?

Is there any known method to waterproof inkjet printable DVDRs after you've printed on them?

I've heard of spraying some kind of clearcoat on them, but there are never any detailed instructions on how to do it (i.e. what type of spray to use, how do you apply it evenly, etc).

Also I've heard of lamination, and was wondering if anyone had any insight on that.

Or if anybody knows of any other methods, that would be great.

I've never tried it but I've read of people using clear hobby spray(non acrylic).

The best way is just to keep them away from water. :D With normal use (ie you always hold the discs by their edges) there shouldn't be a problem, I don't know about greasy fingers...

A well-known American entrepreneur who ran an auto painting business that specialized in cheap paint jobs. He was famous for his advertising slogan "I'll paint any car for $19.99" (changed to $29.99, $49.99, etc. as inflation went up over the years).

Earl Sheib passed away in 1992, but if he were still alive, I'm sure he'd be willing to paint any DVD for $??.99...

His company still exists:

Hi Slim. Yep, you're right - any car, any color.

From the Earl Scheib website itself (see last paragraph of each press release):

"I'll paint any car, any color for $29.95"

Back in high school I had a friend who had his car painted by old Earl and it was awful...overspray on the windshield and tires. :o
I told him next time to buy some Krylon and do it himself. :D

Just curious, are we talking about using DVD's under water? :o
Sub-marine DVD burning? Using them for actual coasters?

Could be that he wants his data to be flood and hurricane proof? Or maybe he wants to make a video documentary of his trans atlantic journey in a rubber inner tube and wants people to recognize his DVDs in case he doesn't make it and they wash up on shore?

This seems to be a Dutch invention and is available in various online shops in Germany as well- google for "CD Colour Protection Spray". I couldn't find it in the local stores I tried, though. Some people suggested using a "fixative" spray as available in art shops- but I'm leery about this because the solvents may attack the disc.

RJW- do you have any more information?

Nope. But If people are interested then I will add the smaller bottle to the next order I will place at cdrwinkel. Which might take a few months.
For printing i could abuse the Canon I865.

The comments on the site are postive about it and cdrwinkel doesn't abuse there score sytsem like some other websites do.

Thanks for the offer. If I find this stuff anywhere locally, I'll do the same (for my Canon i865 :D).

Actually I was wondering if you had any information on the fixative sprays (meant primarily for ink jet paper and photos) which are more readily available- you seem to be well informed on adverse effects of solvents.

Point is that I find out that cdrwinkel and a few others online store these sort of sprays a few weeks ago. Untill I don't know it's the composition I can't say if it's good or bad.

Maybe we should contact Discprint BV. The persons who make this.
If I have some time over I will contact them and see if I can get more info.

I wonder if this is the same stuff as some people use for paper which I saw advertised years ago.

You can use CD/DVD security strip labels like the one in 3M's Tattle Tape series. However, there will be two parallel metal strips that you can see in the pic.

And screw up the balance of the DVD no thank you.
Labels are to problematic.
The spray thingie might be nice but at the moment I don't have any more time to do research on it.
To busy with other stuff.

I haven't had any problems with the security strip labels. The parallel strips are evenly placed and I've used them on DVDs, CDs, blank CDs and DVDs, and VCDs. I've had no problems with them.

I generally use those on blank silver-sided nonprinted discs. Those blanks generally chip easily on the silver side and seems to be the actual layer where data is burned into.
