You are surprised to know the brand of your CD-R and the quality makes so much difference when burning CD-R with DVD burning. As I am writhe this I am burning two brand of CD-R with my DVD burner NEC-3500, with brand GC (General Quality 52X) I am getting max speed burning at 16X while with brand Memorex (52) I am get 48X speed in burning, of course by NEC 3500 only burn CD-R at max speed of 48X.
