Verbatim DataLife Plus 8x DVD+R media

seen some of this stuff on sale round here.
looked at them and saw that they had 2 kinds of spindles, one was made in Taiwan the other Made in India.
they have the same Verbatim reorder number on them.

i'm guessing that the Taiwan are actually manufactured by CMC (the cakebox had that CMC look) and the India are actually made by Moser Bauer (sp?)

is there any difference in the quality between these 2 types ?

Taiwan could be CMC or Prodisc (CMC will have a higher upper "lip" at the top of the cakebox and Times New Roman-style font for the "LOCK" and "OPEN" labels on the top while Prodisc will have a lower upper "lip" and more of a Courier style font for the labels). In general, Prodisc MCC is best, then CMC MCC, then India MCC. Singapore MCC beats them all in most cases, but is all but gone from the market to my knowledge.

Not in India, it isn't ;) I just picked up 40 MCC003 made in Singapore discs yesterday. Anyway, the quality difference isn't THAT pronounced..

I see made in Singapore Verbatim media all the time!

And please don't say that Prodisc MCC is the best.... maybe Prodisc media with MCC code sold under VERBATIM's brand name is good... but I've got some Prodisc made MCC code media that does not hold up to that statement.... not to mention from my own experience I would say that Prodisc would only come even CLOSE to meeting that statement when it is sold under Verbatim's name (which I haven't personally experienced, but I'm told it actually works well, which is quite different from most Prodisc I've used!).

Yep MBIL is makeing 8x verbatim media again.

About prodisc. Yeah there is great variation in what verbatim gets and what others get.

OK back to my question:
VERBATIM:
Taiwan (CMC? Prodisc?) or India (MBIL) ?

I would say yes to both (or all three :P )

Dodecahedron, I haven't noticed any difference in Singapore/Taiwan media (haven't had any Made in India). What you do have to look out for is the 2 varieties of MCC 003- although probably only the newer (better) X47B ones are around now. You can't tell which kind you have without actually looking at a disk. See this post for the distinguishing characteristics.

A few months back I bought to try a 5 box Verbatim4x MADE IN TAIWAN for my standalone DVD recorder Hiteker, works fine..
later wen I must get new discs, I bought a box of 10 pieces,
I didn't get a good look at the box, it looks the same color etc...

Coming home and open the box, there were white label Verbatim discs
MADE IN INDIA, so I heard never of disc from India, and tried to use them
but they will not be recognized by the recorder....
I phoned the shop, and tell them what happened, if I could change them for the TAIWAN MADE, no problem.

I never used them on my computer, now I got Verbatim8x DVD+R MCC003 (DVR-X47B) for my NEC3520. I later will try them, Sony8xDVD+R SONY-D11-00burns at 12x...

I'll keep you posted, Harry

i got some of those Verbatim 8x DVD+R. here is a picture of the spindle
they are made in Taiwan.
re Gen-An's description, it's hard to say if the font of the LOCK and OPEN is Times New Roman or Courier...i would say it's a Sans-Serief type font! so i can't be sure if i got CMC or Prodisc. oh well.

they are the DVR-X47B type
Code: Select all
0000 : a1 0f 02 00 00 03 00 00  00 26 05 3f 00 00 00 00   .........&.?....
0010 : 00 00 03 4d 43 43 00 00  00 00 00 30 30 33 00 38   ...MCC.....003.8
0020 : 23 54 37 12 02 42 6e 02  a8 6b 15 15 0b 0b 08 08   #T7..Bn..k......
0030 : 01 19 1b 0c 0c 0c 0d 01  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   ................

so from the discussion in the link you gave they seem to be the newer kind.
although i must admit i didn't understand everything there... :o

One way to be 100% sure is to check the serial number in the clear plastic hub area of the disc and post it here.

OK here is the serial number from the hub: 4301E1126+06821C02
i'm not sure if it's a + or a t between the 6 and the 0.

so is this a CMC code or Prodisc code ?
how does a generic CMC code look like and how does a Prodics one look?

do you also know for Verbatim DVD-R made in Taiwan?
the serial number from the hub: 4353E1321-10320C05

looks like the same manufacturer.

Both of those are Prodisc serial numbers, so you've got yourself some Prodisc MCC.

thanks for the info.

do you know what CMC media serial numbers are like? both for DVD+R and DVD-R?

also, from your first post, if i understand right, the CMC cakeboxes will have the words OPEN and LOCK in a serief font, like Courier, rather than the Sans-Serief font on the Prodiscs ?

dodecahedron wrote:do you know what CMC media serial numbers are like? both for DVD+R and DVD-R?

Examples for CMC serial numbers (+R I don't have any -R) are
X47B PAH636IG09190382 6
X47A PAH6331B05132793 3

The "12x certified media" that were sold here for a while were MCC003 Made in Taiwan, but had serial numbers like "4188E1612+09225C16" and, according to what I've learned here, are made by Prodisc.

I'm currently reevaluating my MCC003 result- but it's a bit complicated because there are so many variables- firmware, batch, manufacturer and the X47A/X47B thing. I just picked up another box of 8x printable media and it turned out to be X47A. I have problems with these!

More later after I've tried a few more burns and done some more scans.
