Today, CDRLabs brings you a review of Memorex's new external dual-format, double-layer 16x DVD writer. Based on the NEC ND-3500A, this drive is capable of 16x DVD±R, 4x DVD±RW and 4x DVD+R DL writing speeds and has a maximum DVD read speed of 16x. Memorex's new drive also features 48x CD reading and writing speeds, 24x rewriting speeds and a great looking case with support for both FireWire and USB 2.0.

In this review we'll take a look at some of the features found on Memorex's new external DVD writer and see how it compares to some of the 16x DVD±RW drives from the competition. Does it have what it takes? You'll have to read the review to find out.

I often wonder though....why get one of these drives when a retial IDE or OEM + enclosure costs less...must be a fashion statment :D

For more experienced people, making your own external drive makes sense. But for normal people, getting a setup that works without any hassle might be better.

I notice that the Sony 16x DVD-Rs have an Optodisc 16x DVD-R code listed under the quality tests.

Now I know that Optodisc has been working on Sony for OEM's... but I don't think they've succeeded just quite yet :P

Hi Ian,

I know I already requested this privately, but here is another friendly reminder. :)
Can you post the CD-DVD Speed burn graph from a 16x DVDR burn using the firewire interface?

Great somebody found something missing and it wasn't me. :D
With the last few reviews cdrlabs was allready becomming to perfect and I was allready thinking is there any stuff left to improve ? (except for the lay-out )

So why do this well because a lot of enclosures are problematic with one or both and I think the customer does want to know if he can burn at 16x when he buys a 16x drive. For the rest (I haven't read it completely just a quick look through). So just test both allways for external drives.

Yeah, there's definitely an issue with the FireWire interface. I hooked it up to the onboard FireWire controller on my gaming computer (MSI 875P Neo-FISR motherboard). Even when you simulate, the writing speed peaks at about 15x.

Nice to see the info.
I'm not suprised of the problems because of the earlier tests with enclosures in C't.
