LVW 5001

I recently bought a LiteOn LVW 5001 DVD recorder and, being very new to all this, wanted some advice. I zeroed in on this recorder based on on-line reviews (although consumer comments have been mixed), firewire port (for transfer from camcorder which will be its main use), and the price. Next, I went browsing at the local Circuit City store and they had one in stock (even though the website said they weren't available for in-store pick up). I bought it, and then noticed that it was manufactured in December 2003. So, I'm thinking - where has this thing been for last 15 months?!

I doubt it does, but does anyone know if it has the latest firmware on it? And is it easy to upgrade? I'd hate to have that be the first thing I have to do after taking it out of the box. The directions are confusing to me, and I've read that if you lose power during the upgrade the machine gets trashed. I have a LiteOn CD burner, but I don't even know what ISO means.

Finally, this is a 4x recorder. Any recommendations on DVDs to use? I bought some TDK that were 8x, but it was unclear if they are 1x-8x. I'm assuming a 1x-8x dvd will work, in theory, with a 4x recorder.

ok, sorry for the long-winded post, but I'd appreciate any help!

thanks
