I just got my New Plextor 716A (Retail) from costco canada for 149.00. Brouht it home installed and upgraded the f/w to 1.06 Burned the brand new movie "Spanglish" Seems like good burn. But i have some questions, Hope you all can answer. It took me 41 min to rip(Compress) the movie into hard drive. I used the Maxell (Ricohjapan) media burned at 8X speed. I used Sonic Recordnow delux to burn and took only 7 min to burn the 4.4 gig compressed movie i did not adjust anything in the Plextools (By the way I upgraded the Plextools from 2.17 to 2.21. I am going to rip and burn the "Elektra" next in a DL media.
These are my questions;
1) why its taking 41 min to rip the movie?
2)Plextool doesnt show the speed as Plextor advertising (DVD+Dl and -DL spped 6X) it shows only 4X for +DL and 2X for -DL why?
3) How do I set the Booktype ? Do i need a seperate utilities If so where can I find? Or If Plextools has an option?
After I burn the DVD+DL I will let you all know. Please take some time to answer my questions.

1. Is Speed Read enabled? There's another topic about this as well. Some people got very good ripping speeds with the new version of AnyDVD
2. I'm guessing PlexTools still needs to be updated to reflect this. Pop in a Verbatim DL disc and see what speeds it shows.
3. Plextools can do it for DVD+R and DVD+R DL media. You can also use Nero, CD Speed, etc

btw.. It's good to see you finally took the plunge and bought a drive. I think you made a good choice.

Thanks Ian, I was going from pioneer to benq to Plextor. I am glad to go with the Plextor. Just finished burning a DL disk (Memorex) 2.4x burned at 4X. Burn quality wasnt that good according to plextools. But this time i took the advise from this forum I enabled the Anydvd fast mode. Ripped the DVD in 17 min and Burned it in 19 min. Very happy. Also I figured out the booktype setting. I need to test some more and wait for DVD-RDL.

I'm glad to see that someone else had the same success with AnyDVD and their Plextor drive with regards to ripping speeds. It's truly an amazing product!

Keep in mind the differance between ripping & compressing. Ripping will just copy the movie as-is, and will go as fast as the drive can go. Compressing the movie is more CPU dependent than anything; although Nero Recode/DVD Shrinks "fast" modes should (mostly) be able to keep up with the drive if you've got around 3GHz+ (Nero claims 15min to compress on fast mode, on a 3GHz P4, right around what a DVD drive can rip at).

What software (and settings) are you using to compress the movie? And how big was the movie before compressing? Are you just doing a "main-movie" only copy - it'll be faster, and in some cases, with no menu's/special features, the movie can just be copied w/o compressing it.

That could account for the rip time differance's...if the first DVD's main movie only was >4.38GB, and the second DVD's main movie was less..

I use CloneDVD and to be clear, when I say "ripping" I'm actually compressing the disc to my hard drive. I always include all of the discs contents rather than just the movie.

I average around 17 minutes or less for a full dual layer DVD (7.9x GB) on P4 systems ranging from 2.2GHz to 3.8GHz.
