I would like to upgrade by DVD burner and need a USB external model. I have been out of the DVD game for about a year now and am trying to get caught up with the technology. I am narrowing my search to the Plextor PX-712UF and the Plextor PX-716UF.

I've read both reviews here (for the internal versions). Both seemed to have received excellent reviews with the 712 being slightly better in relation - although I fully understand that the drives are not comparable since the 716 is a 16X writer and also DL.

I'm puzzled by one thing though - why is the MSRP for these units still essentially the same? I've found that I can actually get a better price on the 716 than the 712 and I was thinking originally that I might go with the 712 as I figured it would be quite a bit cheaper. Is this just due the fact that the 716 is newer and being discounted or is the 712 really preferable for some reason?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It's probably because the 712UF was originally more expensive and the places with it still in stock, won't discount the price at all.

If it was me, I'd get the 716UF.

Thanks Ian! That is what I assumed, but I appreciate hearing your thoughts. I will likely go ahead with the 716UF then.
