how does this sony compares with Verbatim and Maxell? I tried the one from Walmart and seemed very good. I burned several dvds and Plextor pro tools saying they are excellent burns. Any comments?

I find that it really depends on the drive. Some give very good results.. others total crap.

How true!

I kept hearing people saying MIJ media are the best, however I would like to add that's generally true to some degree, but the best media is the media your burner likes!

I have a Sony 710A and I've tried 8X Sony+/- (Taiwan), 8X Fuji+ (TY Japan), 8X Verbatim- (Taiwan), 4X Maxell+RW (Taiwan) and 8X Maxell- (Japan) and of these discs the 8X Maxell- (Japan) are the worst ones for my burner even though they are MIJ. You can tell just by looking at the discs themselves, the Maxell MIJ discs were of very poor quality comparing to other makes especially on the edges. With the Verbatim, Fuji and Sony, I've 100% OK burnt rate whereas 8X Maxell- (Japan) is only 80% OK.

Back to the specific topic at hand.

I have personally burned and tested with both:
SONY08D1 Made in Taiwan (manufactured by Daxon)
SONY08D1 Made in Japan (manufactured by Sony Japan)

My results with the Taiwanese made SONY08D1 discs have been slightly better than the MIJ discs!

NEC ND-3500AG
Toshiba SD-R5372

I only have a few pieces of the Made in Japan SONY08D1 media so it is difficult to do additional comparisons on even more drives...
