Well, everyone has seen the BenQ DW1640's 8x DVD+R DL writing performance.. what about the NEC ND-3540A?

First, here's a few screenshots.

Need 8x DVD+R DL media? Heck no! You can write to Verbatim's 2.4x DVD+R DL media at 8x.

Sorry.. still in the process of checking Ritek, Ricoh, etc. No idea if they work at 8x yet. I kinda doubt it though.

This has gotta be one of the oddest writing methods I've seen. It writes at 8x only during the last third of the first layer.

I'm not really sure what NEC is doing here. You're not really saving any time by writing at 8x. In fact, its slower than most drives that write at 6x. Hopefully the performance is better with true 8x DVD+R DL media.

Like the ND-3520A, the book type of DVD+R DL media is automatically set to DVD-ROM.

Writing quality tests coming up...

It looks like write quality testing isn't supported in the current firmware.

Here's a scan with a BenQ DW1620.

KProbe scans coming later. Drive is in use right now. :D

Actually, you can scan at 16x now... but for some reason when you scan at max it always tops out at 8x. It probably has to do with what version of CD/DVD Speed you or I use. But anything faster then 8x on the BenQ is pretty messed up, as the drive slows down and starts up again every .25GB or something like that.

Probably the firmware. I'm using the latest CD Speed and it reads at 8x when set to max no matter what media I use.

they succesfully burned at 8X with verbatim media here:

18 minutes and 34 seconds

Very odd. I gotta talk to Wes about how he got the quality scan to work. Between that and the odd writing strategy, I wonder if my drive is defective.

It looks like the gremlins have taken a vacation. The drive works fine tonite.

Write quality testing still doesn't seem to work right. The drive won't make it to the second layer.

The disc reads fine though.
