Whats the different between them except the 740 writes 8x on dual layer and has only 2mb buffer.

I know the 740 is new but I will buy 1 more dvd recorder to my other comp, I have right now the 716 and im very satisfied with this one, should I get 740 ???

It also has 6x DVD-RW and 32x CD-RW writing speeds.

Thd downsides? It writes to DVD-R DL media at only 4x and lacks all of the PX-716A's special technologies.

I wonder if PLextor used a OEM of this one.
ALso I wonder if it still uses the expensive SANYO chipset. Because plextor complained a little to the press that the chipset was expensive and the reason why Plextor Px-716 was that high priced.

Other differences:
- 2mb Buffer
- lighter
- higher MTBF as PX-716
- slower ejecting
- dimensions.
- 8x CLV recording !
- arround 79 Euro (includeing taxes according to german info)

Funny that the say it's lower quality as PX-716 and next come up with a higher MTBF.

So let the guessing begin.
True plextor or OEM and if OEM then who.
Knoweing plextor and seeing the dimensions this could be a NEC OEM.
However also Benq and Lite On could be.
Benq is a option. Lite On would be a surprise but I won't rule it out.

They shouldn't use OEM's, like with the PX-504A. Guess I'll be passing for sure.

I want to make some observations... PX-740A has only 33MB/s maximum bandwidth on IDE (UDMA-2), while PX-716A has up to 66MB/s max bandwidth on IDE (UDMA-4). Does this make a difference? At 16x DVD, the max Read/Write speed is 22.16MB/s, so that uses about 33% of the 716's bandwith vs. 66% of the 740's bandwidth. The 716 just seems better in that comparison, but it would be nice to compare the data rates of the two side by side in sustained READING to see if capacity makes the difference.

Also, when I read the specs for PX-716SA (SATA), it has support for only 4x DVD+R DL, and the max bandwidth was 66MB/s (UDMA-4). That doesn't make sense to me. The SATA bandwidth should be 150MB/s shouldn't it? Obviously, SATA is better than PATA in part becasue of the ease of plugging & unplugging when you have to get into the case. But the real advantage is supposed to be bandwidth, right?

I learned from Plextor that the DVD+R DL speed supported for PX-716SA is now 6x. The max bandwidth to the device is 66MB/s even though the SATA specification allows up to 150MB/s. I'll probably still get it..

The PX-716SA uses an PATA to SATA adapter.. so technically it is limited to 66 MB/s. It really doesn't matter though since the drive doesnt' come close to reaching this speed.
