System (Windows XP Home) can't see any disk in drive, neither Software installation DVD nor blank DVD-RW. Get message "insert a disk into drive D:". Drive "D" recognized as a DVD-RW drive. Device mgr lists drive as "Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109", Driver :Microsoft, date 7/1/2001, Driver version 5.1.2535.0. I attempted to and apparently successfully updated firmware to 1.40.

What version of XP are you using? I have been having a similar problem ever since I upgraded to SP2 for Win XP.

I'm using XP Home SP2. Spoke to Pioneer Customer Support and they suggested a bad drive. Turns out drive was DOA from retailer. Returned and installed replacement drive and all OK now.

Great. Glad to hear you got your problem fixed. I finally got my drive to burn a DVD but had to go at it differently. I still think my problem is SP2 related in some fashion. Check my drivers out now.

try some of the tips listed there, like uninstalling the IDE channel the drive is on in Device Manager. maybe it will help.
