Plextor 716A... 2x CLV DVD-VIDEO Read?

I bought this drive on the 26th of this month and I have been very pleased with it, but one major thing that bugs be about it is that it only reads DVD-Video files at 2x CLV. I checked my manuals and online resourses and its true it does do that from the factory, Plextors manual says that it does that to avoid noise and vibartion. Does anyone know how to get around this? I use DVD Shrink and it takes forever to rip video to the hard drive. I started using my DVD-Rom Lite-On 163D and it works fine... rips at around 6x which is fine by me. Does anyone know of a DVD-Rom/CD-RW Combo drive that would rip any faster?

Install a 21-day trial of AnyDVD from SlySoft.com and enable the Speed Control feature.

I always found this odd as the drive will read DVD-Videos at a pretty good clip with Speedread enabled.. but when actually ripping them, its much slower.
