I recently purchased a LITON 1633 hoping is was decent in reading scratched DVDs but I keeping getting a error messages on the pressed original DVDs. this drive has the modified firmware for fast ripping to 16x. Could it be that this drive can't really handle ripping speeds at 16x? This drive only craps out or stops on the dual layered more often than the burnt DVDs or single layered pressed DVDs and these are discs that not scratched

I really just want a good DVD rw for ripping scratched DVDs but speed comes a close second. I really don't want DVD rom because I already have a Samsung 616E and this reads mostly everything I put in it but takes way too long for ripping and dvd roms comes close to the same price for a dvd burner.

Hello!

Never had real scratched DVDs, but I read in the c´t-magazine that Pioneer do very good job with bad DVDs.

The 109 is also a fast reader for movie-DVDs, read Ian´s review :)

BTW the Liteon are not bad readers at all.

Why don't you just get a disc doctor and fix the scratched dvds?

How well does a disc doctor (or other affordable disk repairers) work?

I check DVDs & CDs out of the library system & they are often too scratched to read.

The repairers are quit bad if you talk about devices like
Disc doctor, Skip doctor or antiskip which are suposed to polish away the scratches. Polshing yourself with specialpapers works much better.

For tools and good drives ( I thought Lite on did prety well better as pioneer when it came to scratches.) for reading damaged media I suggest C't 16 -2005.
