After my Sony DW-P50A refused to write RW's and was replaced after a costumer-service hell, with a whimsical Toshiba SD-R6252 that sometimes wouldn't even read original DVD movies, I went on, spent $110 and got myself a brand new NEC ND-6500A.

I hoped that that'd end the trouble - but after two first (successful) test burns, everything I burn now seems to to be useless. Writing finishes flawlessly, producing a disc which fails miserably on verification. I tried different media (MCC 03RG20, Ritek R04, Optodisc +RW) at different speeds, with identical results.

WinXP SP2, 512MB RAM; Secondary Master, UDMA on.

I feel as if someone up high doesn't want me to burn DVDs. Any ideas??


P.S. When I first installed the drive, the door didn't want to open; I had to slightly loosen the screw closest to the eject button.

make sure your using 40 pin/80 wire cables

and if possible that dma is turned on in computers bios

Hox, that's a laptop drive.
@binba2 - FOrget verification. Try a CDSpeed scan. Does it give a smooth transfer curve?

wtf are you talking about, 2.5" hard drives are 44 pins, 3.5" hard drives are 40 pin

Yeah, but the 6500 is a laptop drive. Anyway, which was the last 3.5" DVD burner that cost 110$ and wasn't called "Plextor"?

I've never seen any 3.5" burners. They've all been 5.25" to now...

Got mixed up with HDD form factors..

Ok, now that you're done with your cabling issues for my slimline drive, I got the test results.

Reading both CDs and DVDs looks smooth, although CD read speed was X12 - for a X24 drive! How does that make sense?

And there are the write results - since this is the first time I ever use cdspeed, I don't know how to interpret them myself.
I used Verbatim media, that the drive rated for X8.

Those read curves look fine. Issue is, your drive is writing only at 6X. The MCC03RG20 discs are 16X, have you tried 8X rated media like the MCC02RG20 discs?
