Aopen duw 1608 for $58.99 at Costco in Canada...thoughts????

Hi guys I have been looking at buying a Dual Layer Burner. I was at costco today and they had two burners. The Plextor 716a with 6X dual layer firmware upgrade for $149.99 and the Aopen DUW1608 Retail box for $58.99.
I know that the Plextor is a better drive....but price is important for me.......what do people think of the DUW 1608? What about firmware upgrades for it? Anychance that this machine will be able to burn DL faster than 2.4x?

Hello!
Use the search-function and you will find something about the 1608.
It can be upgraded to 1616 and 4x DL
However, I´m not going to recommend it. The drive seems to be real slow for it´s speed : more than 10 minutes for 8x burn, almost 8 Mins for 16x burn, picky with media

Well I guess since I don't want to pay $7.00 a piece Canadian for blank Dual Layer disks I might as well stick with my trusty Nutech DDW-082 single layer 8x burner. I think I have about 500 blank media home that are all single layer...4x and 8x.
Do I really gain much by buying a DL new burner?....I don't plan on buying any 16x media until I get my present stock of 4x and 8x sl media used up.

Damn......this morning I just happened to be driving by Costco and the next thing I new I was coming out of the store with my new Aopen Dual layer burner.
Anyway....for $58.00 Canadian it seemed like too good a deal to pass up....so I figured it would give me another toy to play with and perhaps watch for a decent deal to come along on dual layer media. Not going to get rid of my Nutech DDW-082 though.

Well I have burned about a dozen DVDs now....and I must say the drive seems like great value. It was $30 cheaper than anything else I could find with decent software and I did take advantage of changing the face plate (3 come with it). It is very quiet...both opening, closing and when searching. I do wish the blue light turned red when burning like my Nutech drive does.

I have been using the Aopen drive for a couple of weeks now and have made an observation when backing up some of my personal DVDs with Shrink........there has been 3 instances where the Aopen machine couldn't read it.....was getting the cycle redundancy error.....when I put the same dvd in my Nutech ddw-081@082 it read the dvd without reporting the error?
So needless to say I will be happily keeping my nutech burner.
