Today we bring you a review of OptoRite's new portable DVD writer, the TED80Y1. While small in size, this drive sports specs like 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD-R and 4x DVD±RW writing speeds and a maximum DVD read speed of 8x. The TED80Y1 also includes features like 24x CD reading and writing speeds, ExacLink buffer underrun protection and a USB 2.0 interface.

In this review we'll take a look at some of the features found on the TED80Y1 and hen see how it performs. Is OptoRite's portable DVD writer the best choice for the person on the go? You'll have to read the review to find out.

Hello!

Nice review :)

I don´t can compare that drive because I never had a slim-drive, but the overall writing-quality seems to be good for a drive like that.

BTW, I thought that Optorite never exists because MSI don´t sell drives like they do earlier and the Web-page from OR is not actual. Whe I go to the Europe-page I read still "New 12x-drives"

Yeah, they haven't updated their news in awhile. They didn't mention their 16x or slim-line drives at all. Instead they mention their laser mice (nice I hear).

As far as writing quality goes, I didn't like the results I saw with the DW1620. When the discs were written at 8x, the PI/PIF rates and jitter jumped up considerably.

This seems to be the initial firmware.. so who knows. Maybe OptoRite can fix it.

competition

any worthy competitors for this guy?

I need the small form factor (eventually USB powered reading at least) but except LaCie slim usb dvd burners, which cost double, nothing comes to mind.

You mean an external USB-drive small factor?

Hm, Freecom have those things, but it´s very expensive

nevermind i found the pioneer dvr-k05, the matshita UJ-845-B, or nec nd-2650 (probably the best tweakable but with no dvd-ram and slot load) + a mapower or deltron enclosure solve the problem for $140-$160.

Personally I don´t have a slim-type-drive. But I know that the reference-drives are this 2:

http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a141653.html

But what I have to say about slim-drive is, that they only have disadvantage against the 5,25"-drives:

- more expensive

- Slow (8x = ca. 13 Mins)

- writing-quality not good

- bad FW-support

yes but i can take them with me.

the first drive you specified has a ton of firmware updates and the second one is the tray version of the pioneer i've specified.
as far as price goes they are $50 more expensive on the average and i don't care too much about speed. quality seem to be for the nec at least pretty close to that of an internal writer.
