CD-Ripping

I would like to know what is the concensus regarding the quality and speed of ripping audio CDs using modern DVD-RW drives.

I vaguely remember that back in the days, it was prefered to use CD-RW over DVD-RW, hence I've bought both a 52x32x52 Lite On CD-RW, and a Pioneer 106 for my current system.

I am considering building a new system, and am wondering if there is still any point to get a CD-RW drive (I don't care so much for 52x speed, in fact, I rarely burn CDRs anymore).

On a side note, I am also shopping for a new DVD-RW drive (16x). It seems a lil strange that most drive get 8/10 on cdrlabs. Is it because none really outclass the others? Is there any benefit for me of opting for a newer drive if I don't really care able dual layer (media too expensive) or faster writing speed (I don't burn a lot in one go).

Thanks.

It is kinda odd isn't it? All drives have their good and bad points. Instead of relying on a score, you're better off deciding for yourself. Think of your needs and find the drive that fits them best.

The Pioneer 106 was and still is a good drive. If you don't need the faster writing speeds or DL support, there's no reason to upgrade.

A lil bump regarding my CD-ripping question, and if there is no replies, then i'll just let this thread sink for good..

Hello!

If you not want to burn CD-R all around the clock, you can get for a DVD-writer.

Double Layer is only one fact for getting a new DVD-writer. The Pioneer 106 is a 4x-writer and I´m sure it get problems with newer 8x and 16x certified media. That´s the reason why I´m looking for a new DVD-writer, my LG 4082 is a 8x-writer and had trouble with newer media.

Can you specify your CD-ripping-question? What´s the point, high speeds or copy-protection?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

The point you made on DVD media is actually something I was just about to ask about. I read elsewhere that older burners may have difficulty writing new medias, so I just changed my mind on buying a stack of 100 16x Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs and confirm the issue here. I find the concept of older drives not being able to write new media strange (at least far stranger than people trying to burn 8x media at 16x).
On the other hand, my 4x burner still has no problem with 8x TY media.

Regarding CD ripping, I am mainly concerned with maintaining in coping copy protected CDs and quality. I am too concerned with speed really, I use EAC, so it takes ages to rip CDs in the first place (a copy protected CD takes like 2h 45min on my Lite On 52x32x52).

The older DVD-writer don´t know the newer codes so the speed will be sometimes max. 2x (4x-drives) and 4x (8x-drives) with default-strategy. And some Dye´s of 16x-media are not suitable for low speeds.

I don´t use EAC, so I don´t can´t give you exactly recommends for that software. But I can say that Plextor DVD-Burners (not the 740, it´s a rebadged Benq) and Liteon are the best drives for reading audio-Cd, no matter with or without copy-protection. But the Plextor PX 716 is very expensive and the Liteon-drives only midlle-ware when it comes to DVD-writing-quality.

Thanks. I guess its almost time for me to update to a new drive after all.
I was thinking of holding onto my 106 until it dies, or until towards the end of DVD-RW drives (so that I can get the "best" one for my need).

Still, the Plextor 740 is not exactly cheap in the UK, so I am more or less waiting for the review of the BenQ before making my decisions.
