BenQ questions...

Just ordered BenQ 1640 DVD from NCIX (Canada)...

1.) Which specific Taiyo-Yuden media would be best for this burner? Also, +R or -R ???

2.) Currently have Lite-On 48x12x40 CD-RW, and Toshiba M1612 DVD-ROM... Remove which one to make room for the BenQ??

Thx

Welcome to CDRLabs
A:
1.-R/+R only matters if you use it for DVD players,I personally prefer +R with the DVD-ROM booktype.
2.I would keep the Toshiba internally and buy an external case($60US) for the Lite-On.

with firmware BSHB the Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-Rs seem to perform a little better then the DVD+Rs, but the difference in inconsequential. Don't use Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-Rs even with firmware BSIB.

Dolphinius...

So, you're saying use the 8x TY's, not the 16x's ? And, for what reasons?...

Thx

Probally the fact that Benq hasn't implemented the right optimal strategy for the 16x media yet.

Well, I'm assuming you want the burned disc to be playable, right? RJW pretty much has the right idea. The discs just don't come out looking very good at all, so it's a "wait for a new firmware to the fix the problem" scenario with that media.

You can probably cross-flash to the retail firmware... and some OEM drives COME with the retail firmware anyways. There's a whole site dedicated to BenQ firmware cross flashing, I just don't remember where it is right now

As for Verbatim 16x, I think it worked fine, I'll have to double check when I get home though.

16x -R from verbatim should work according to my sources.

Yeah, I generally remember when one of the big names doesn't work right... but I still like to double check with my notes if I'm not 100% sure.

NCIX usually just carries the OEM versions of drives, since that's what sells the most. The Retail version generally is just a pretty box in a lot of cases.... maybe I'll mention to them that in the case of BenQ there are actually firmware differences.

By the way, I heard that one of the reasons this drive was delayed was because of a port strike.... not sure if that affected the USA as well though.
