Ok, Verbatim it is then. Thanks for the replies. That's a really handy list Dolphinius, I appreciate it.

What benefit would I gain by spending the extra money on the TY media? Durability over time? Recording quality? Something else? Nothing, at least in a practical sense? Something else?

The TY media is generally better made, and will probably last longer.... although A-Grade Optodisc has scored quite well in longevity tests in the past, I would still chose Taiyo Yuden over it for important stuff. 99% of my personal stuff goes on Acro Circle 8x DVD-Rs these days though. They have become quite stable on most burners, and the pricing is too good to ignore. (just don't use them on Pioneer DVR-107's!!).

As for Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-Rs... they don't work on the DW1640, even with the latest firmware. Well, they'll burn at 16x... but the results are horrible! So stick with TY 8x DVD-Rs, or Acro Circle 8x DVD-Rs (buy Acro Circle specifically, since many *MANY* companies will sell B grade or worse Optodisc media as 'A Grade' Optodisc.... even Rima! So look for Acro Circle brand).
Hehe TYG03 doesn't often give QS 99's but it's quite consistant at QS 98's. Horrible might be a bit of an overstatement.

Well, I wasn't using that firmware at the time.... and even so, I've never had the as good results on those scans. Not even once!

Seems Typical latley that one batch to the next differ quite a bit. Mine is (73) writes well in both my 1620's Nec 3520 and the 1640 but my Plextor 716A just destroys this stuff. :(

I've noticed that 16x media in general rarely performs as well as 8x@12x or even 8x@16x :o

Hopefully that will be fixed with newer firmwares and drives... but it seems almost universal

@ETP I agree Verbatim is great media seems to burn best @12x in my burners. :)
@dolphinius_rex. Yes agree 8x media seems better oversped than 16x media, although I am really hoping with the new release of YUDEN000 T03 that might change. You would probaby have a better idea than I about that though. Oh Yeah, Go B.C. Lions!!!

I have very bad experiences with Immation, but among the good onesare FujiFilm DVD+/-R (8x) and Maxell DVD+/-R(8X) both made in Japan.

Yay. - Aussies take note, I just found a local distributor of Taiyo Yuden - JPL Displays.

They sell thermal printable and inkjet printable versions - is there any reason to prefer one over the other performance or longevity wise? Here's the product page. http://www.jpldisplays.com.au/oscommerc ... rers_id=23

Spent most of yesterday morning digging through media at Best Buy and another store for Fuji and Maxell MIJ and all we could could find was MIT. Talk about hard to find MIJ latley! Unless you order it. Guess we got a little spoiled.

No, they are NEXXTECH brand, and *NOT* Verbatim brand. There is a VERY big difference between having a Mitsubishi MID code and having Verbatim level quality.

I had bought some NEXXTECH 8x DVD+R media a while back when they were on sale for $7. It was a CMC MID code. I planned to use the media for discs that I gave to other people. (Why give family the TY media? Heh.)

My NEC drive used to burn those things amazingly well. I always had really good CDSpeed scores. The BenQ 1640 doesn't burn them as well as the NEC did (even at 8x), but still much better than other cheap media. I can also burn them at 12x on the 1640 and still get (what I consider anyway) good scores.

Never tried the NEXXTECH -R media before, though.

As do I! :D

I think Circuit City had these on sale for $6 one week. For $6 or $7, the price is definitely right. Even my "low" CDSpeed score of 94 when written at 12x on the BenQ 1640 is still consistently higher than some of the Fuji-branded Prodisc crap I've gotten.

My 16x burn didn't turn out as good, but I'm happy to burn them at 12x. And will definitely pick some more up next time they go on sale at CC. Everyone I have given the discs too has had no problems playing the content on them.

Hm, that´s a strange one. Maybe Cdspeed says that MCC-Codes means Vern´batim discs, what is simply wrong. Maybe Cdspeed says the same when you insert a Infosmart with MCC-Code

Verbatim only sells A-Grade-media from MCC. B-Grade sold as Infiti, Reprint-media etc.

So the pure MCC-Code don´t mean that it´s real MCC-stuff.

One More Time, The Disc Manufacturer says "Verbatim" and MCC )3RG20 is clearly Verbatim disc MID.

CD-DVD Speed is not the be-all-end-all to this issue. It simply reports any media carrying the MCC media code as being manufactured by "Verbatim" which is wrong since Verbatim doesn't do any manufacturing. It should technically say "Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation" since that's the company that actually does the development and production of the dyes used on Verbatim-branded discs (Verbatim is owned by MCC to be sure, but it's just a brand name). Also keep in mind CD-Speed has NO WAY of telling a disc that was actually made by MCC from a disc made by some 3rd tier manufacturer that has "borrowed" the MCC media code.
