Hello!

Looks like that Benq 1640 has still problems burning @16x :(

Actually it's quite an excellent 16x burner in some cases... but for some reason it has some SERIOUS issues with TY 16x DVD-Rs. The discs become a lot more readable with firmware BSKB however, although I'd still like to see some further fine tuning of the firmware with regard to quality.

BSKB is still inofficial, I guess?

Still more fine-tuning of TYG03 or some other media?

Doy you use in your review BSKB?

I am really impressed with this disc. I swapped the write strategy of TYG02 with TYG03 and burnt this TYG02 @ 16X with WOPC off. Burn time was 5:45.Scanned in my liteon.

You would guess right

And I meant that more fine tuning was needed for TYG03... the burner is general is more forgiving then any other burner I've seen.

As for what firmware I used for burning testing 150+ DVDR/RW/DL discs.... well, I decided NOT to hold the review up to retest every disc that I'd burned with an older firmware, so only problamatic discs we re-burned with newer firmwares (mostly Dual layer DVD+R media from Ritek and Ricoh). So many of the discs were burned with BSJB and BSHB. A very small amount used BSIB, and anything troublesome (if possible) was re-tested with BSKB.

I'm sure looking forward to your review. The amount of work you're putting into it is a bit intimidating, though. I'm a bit anxious that you'll burn out if you keep upping the ante as you have in your reviews for CDRLabs. :o

Somene talked to me that the Benq 1640 is with some media much better than the 1620 not only of some fine-tuning but because the 1640 won´t overspeed much media. And he said that with DVD-R Benq do much improvement against the 1620.

What do you think?

I think that if I agreed with that person, I'd be understateing the abilities of the DW1640. As it is I'll have to release a seperate article on QSuite alone just to do it justice. That's on TOP of my efforts on the review.

@MediumRare:
I'm deffinately concerned about that myself! I'm going to be cutting back on on some of the obsessive compulsiveness of my reviews, and focus on maybe only 70 or 80 main DVDR/RW/DL types. Also, I'm trying to pick up another (second) PX-716SA to make testing a little quicker / less frustrating for me. I think that'll help a LOT in my future reviews.

Where did you get BSKB? rpc1.org only has BSJB out. Could you post BSKB possibly? Thankyas...

It's a Beta only, not open to the public yet. I wouldn't want to screw up their release of it... especially if they tweak it further without revising the name.

It wouldn't do you much good without the new QSuite anyways (also not available yet)... it would be like simultaneously castrating and lobotomizing the drive's potential

At least if it's lobotomized, it doesn't realize what it's missing...

Any word on when we should officially see BSKB?

No official word no... but they did tell me it should be soon. I know they want to do many more things with the software, but will be releasing an interrim version while the other features are added to the next release.

I just got my BenQ 1640 from newegg this evening came with f/w BSHB, manufacturing date May 2005 and made in China. Decided to by pass BSHB and upgrade directly to BSJB and burn two different disks:

1) Philips DVD-R (8X) CMC MAG AE1 (NEC b3500 burn this media at 12X): The irst two graphs represent the performance of this disk with newly BenQ 1640 and f/w BSJB.

2) YUDEN000 T02(000) DVD+R (8X) (NEC 3500 burn this media at 16X). The second two graphs represent performance of this disk with newly BenQ 1640 and f/w BSJB.

TCAS, could you do a quality-scan with the 1640? Use Cdspeed - disc-quality and scan @8x. This would be interesting for other users.

BTW, if you had time you can scan some media burned with your Aopen.

As you requested these are the quality scan for previous post and ripping speed using pressed DVD Video D/L disk.

Hello!

TCAS, how could you get a so bad burned T02? Or is it a faked mediacode?
