TCAS, how could you get a so bad burned T02? Or is it a faked mediacode?

I think it's because of the scanning speed (max).

TCAS: please repeat the scan at a lower speed. I think 8x is realistic for BenQ drives (LiteOn @4x for comparison with other results).

It was set to max, but the actual scan speed *was* 8x, so I don't think setting it to 8x will change the scan.

No this disk is genuine T02 made Japan and I have never had problem with when I burn it with my NEC 3500. I might to night try Maxell also made in Japan and see how that will do and will post the result.

The problem is this drive refuse to overspeed any media in burning process, the following is TDK DVD+R (4X) CMC MAG F01 (000) burned at 4X. Notice I have set this drive to set Booktype to DVD-ROm for (DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R D/L) but the burned DVD+R still being shown as DVD+R as you can see the following graphs.

in CDSpeed go to File -> options, in the User Interface section, Disc Info (DVD) choose Book Type.

Thanks dodecahedron, just little while ago I was digging into Nero CDSpeed and I find out the solution exactly as you have suggested. Thanks again.

Just upgraded to new BenQ BSKB, burned the first D/L Pressed Video DVD to Maxell DVD+R (8X) 002 burned at 16X with "OverSpeed" on and "SolidBurn" activated.

Here is another burn this time the disc is TDK DVD+R (4X) CMC MAG F01 burned at 12X. Look like this new f/w(BSKB) is tremendous boots to 1640 as far as "OverSpeed" concern.

TCAS! So what is the bottom line? 1640 better than the 3500 and 716? Do I need to rush out and buy one? LOL

Hi etp; My personal observation so far shows the with new f/w BSKB and and SolidBurn plus OverSpeed function may be it is safe to say that BenQ 1640 edges the NEC3500 both in quality of burning and overspeed the medias plus obviously the 1640 is wat faster reader (Ripper) drive that 3500. But we have to wait for more inputs from others and more testing also.

Since I am a total newbie when it comes to DVD (at least regarding all the scans) can someone explain what would be the best option for me. I am thinking of upgrading my DVD-burner. I tend to buy TY media due to their reputation for being the "best", and the BenQ 1640 seems well regarded overall, so I am considering getting it as well. But with the issue raised about the TY G03 media raised, I am not sure what media to get.

Is it better to get TY G03 and burn at 16x? 8x?
Or should I get the TY G02 (saving a few quid in the process) and burn at 16x? 8x?
How about 8x TY DVD+R?

The answer is probably in those graphs, but I don't want to misinterprete those.

I don't mind burning at slower speed if it result in better quality. Actually, quality is all I am concerned about, and if there is another drive that is more compatible with G03 or G02, I would like to know about it.

Thanks :)

I burn at 8X these days to be on the safe side. But the NECs do very well at 16X with ty002 MIJ media +R/716 does 16X with this also. Just about all the new burners will do most media at 12X. My Ritec +R 8X does not like to be burned above 8x with any of my burners! I got it cheap so you get what you pay for. Stick to the TY002 MIJ or verbat 16X and get a 1640/3540/4540/716/110D/1693. All of those have had good results. I think I prefer the Verbat these days by a very slim margin. Maybe! LOL

First welcome to CDRLabs Axbattler, I agree with etp. Good Quality Media, Media and Media.

Thanks.

I have also heard good thing on the NEC in another forum.

Under what condition would it be better to pick one over the other?

I am only interested in quality in the end, since I don't burn that often, and am pretty used to my 4x burner, I just want a combination that would give me the best odds, and if it can be achieved at even lower cost, then all the better.

I would like to clarify a little more. I don't see myself burning dual layer any time soon due to the cost of the media. I've not burnt any DVDRW, and probably won't need to do that often. So I am mainly concerned with quality with DVD-R or +R.

Maybe the new Pioneer 110 is the right?

I personally own both NEC 3500 and BenQ 1640 (in addition to AOpen 1608@1616 and Lite-On 411@811) and I have burned hundreds of DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs, by my own experience both BenQ 1640 and NEC 3500 have given me very good quality of burning without any hearth burning. Any of these two makes a good and reasonable choice.

Thanks. My Pioneer 106 has served me faithfully (hundreds of DVDs), so I wouldn't mind going back to them.

Do any of those drive NEC/BenQ/Pioneer have a unique feature that stands out (and is useful)? Companies seem to release features I've never heard before (e.g. "SolidBurn" for the latest BenQ through the firmware update). Unfortunately, I do not have the time at the moment to go through each of them and try to differentiate the marketing hype from the useful features.

Benq and NEC allow quality-scans. If you could trust it, I don´t know, there´s a big thread here about the abilities.

But that´s all, nothing more special features.

the new Pioneero 110 has (or will have soon?) DVD-RAM recording capability.

Umm, the 110D already here in the UK doesn't have DVD-RAM recording capability. I wonder if we'll see the 110 here.

Doesn't sound like there is a big difference between the NEC and BenQ.. I am starting to really wonder what makes the 1640 special. Is it for non-TY media? Reading capability? Something else? With both being well regarded, I am ever more confused as to which one is more appropriate for me use :-?

It has way more special features then the NEC:

Solidburn, Overspeed, WOPC, QScan, and of course Media Testing Abilities.

Some would argue that the NEC can do media testing (I wouldn't be one of those people).

After reading the other thread, I have an idea of what Solidburn and Overspeed allows. Not sure what WOPC and QScan are though.

And also, based on the current result, am I better off getting some TYG02 and burn at 8x, or TYG03 and burn at 16x for maximum quality? Those are the two most likely media I will be buying (or the DVD+R equivalent).

(I am kinda making the assumption that burning a media above the rated speed would hurt the quality, please correct me if that is not the case).

About NEC not being able as tester because of it's results.

Same can be said about Benq. Also Benq with current software produces sometimes results which are theoretical impossible accroding to the ECMA standards.
