Lite-On IT Lands OEM Orders For 16x DVD Burners From NEC

This could be bad news for NEC fans. While I'm hoping that they're just going to be using Lite-On drives in their computers, I have a sneaking suspicion we'll be seeing rebadged Lite-On's in the future. Even if Lite-On manufactures drives based on NEC designs, I don't think the quality will be as good.

From what I've read, Pioneer is also looking to outsource. :x

Pioneer allready does occasional OEM's with Benq/ACER.
Remember the Acer manufacturerd 106D version.

Also keep in mind that japanese compannies might want to use there factories for production of next generation formats which are more profitable and more complicated to make. That's why they probally want to do the first drives in house.

Well, so much for good NEC drives

On the flip side of things...I've never bought an NEC drive before. Came close a few times, but went with a Pioneer 107 (that I really, really miss) then a BenQ 1620.

Hello!

Did Liteon use their own design´s for manufacturing NEC´s or use they the NEC-design and produce in licence?

Sure hope they use NECs! Better buy that 3540 quick!

LiteOn has been producing NEC's DVD-ROM drives for a few years now, so it won't surprise me too much if NEC moves some of their DVD-RW production to them as well.

That´s a shock for me. I have a NEC ND 3500 and a LiteOn 1653S and I can say that the NEC beats the Lite without problems when it comes to writing-quality.
I know the newer Lite´s, especially the 1693 is a big improvement against the 1653s, but isn´t a match for the NEC 3540.
I can only hope that LiteOn switches to an other chipset which performs better than the Mediatek they use at the moment.

Why not hope for the best and hope they take the reading quality of Lite On and combine with the burning quality of NEC.
Yep Lite On's are much better readers.

But very slower, I guess? The NEc reads DVD R up to 16x, the Liteon only 8x.

Yea, LiteOn is one of the slower drives when using official firmwares. #-o They are perfectly capable of much faster reads, but requires the use of patched firmwares.

I have the 1653s with CS0P LED-fix. I use Omnipatcher and set the speed for reading DVD-R and +R to 12x and 16x.

I was disappointed that the 1653 comes in big trouble when reading a perfect burnt Fuji DVD+R 8x T02, at over 10x-speed it lowers the reading-speed.

I wonder about that, because it can read a extremly bad burnt DVD+RW from Sentinel (written by 1653), while other drives can´t read it or can´t recognize the media

Yes.. and Plextor has drives manufactured in China and Japan.

What I mean by outsource, is leave the bulk of the development and everything up to someone else.

Their "exclusive" first look.

I think someone needs to tell that news poster what exclusive means.

I hope this is only for NECs computer division or to temporally set demand for burners, and not a permanent solution. NEC ODD products have been very good to me, so in outsourcing it will be a great loss.

NEC sells much more drives than they ordered from Liteon, so I hope NEC produce still drives
