Key features of the Benq/Philips support:
1/ Support for Benq 822/1610/1620/1625/1640 and Philips 885/1640/16LS DVD writer.
2/ Support for official .exe flasher, .cvt firmware files and unofficial RPC1 patched firmware files.
3/ Increasing the DVD read speed by 50-100% depending on the drive model (riplock patch)
4/ Increasing the DVD write speed by lossless write strategy swapping
5/ Reducing DVD write speed
6/ Replacing of Media Codes with manually entered or imported Media Codes for currently unsupported Media Codes.
7/ Text file export of Media Code and write speed tables.

DVD+R/-R and DVD-Video already rip at 16x... the only things that can rip SLIGHTLY faster are DVD+RW/-RW, and DVDDL/+RDL/-RDL.

It's just a pretty darn good drive to begin with

Just to add my two cents. The BenQ 1620 will rip a Pressed DL disc at around 14.65x with MCSE Speed Patched FW and the 1640 will rip at around 15.50x+(MCSE patched). Maximum speed of course. Pretty fast when you want to rip a full disc in under 10 minutes.

etp; This drive happen to be one the best if not the best 16X drive we can have, if it is not topping NEC3500 in some area atleast stands shoulder by shoulder to that drive plus its fast ripping cpability (16X when patched with MCSE) over shadow other 16X burners. Enjoy your new BenQ 1640.

When you patched the BSLB with MCSE, then you have to check the box which says read speed increase then save the patched f/w after that flashed this one reboot and now your reading should start within 6.5X--6.67X. If you do not start with this figure then some thing has gone wrong.

TCAS! All my media is saying 16X (all of it)and my 109 does a great job of reading! So I am not sure I want to leap on a hacked FW just yet. Let me do a few burns and see whats up with the factory FW!

Maxell 002 MIJ at 16X=8+ mins
Maxell 002 MIJ at 12X=6+ mins
Nice fast clean burn at 12X. I will probably do all my burns at 12X on the 1640 to be safe.

PS/ this is the fastest time I have seen for the Maxell 002 MIJ media in any drive.

etp: Way before BenQ 1640, the NEC 3500 has been burning Maxell DVD+R(8X) 002 @ 12X without any problem, as a mater fact I have burned more than 60 discs of 002 with NEC 3500 @12X speed with excellent results.

I have to agree with ETP, I've never seen such clean burns on Maxell 8x DVD+Rs before then with the DW1640 @12x. Makes me happy I've got lot's of Maxell 8x DVD+Rs I can use for my own stuff (and not only just a small amount I would need to save for reviews). :D

TCAS and dolphinius_rex!
I think 6mins plus a few secs is faster than the 3500 at 12X with the Maxell MIJ 002 +R media. I think the 1640 starts out faster than the NEC 3500. Anyone observe this first hand?
Also no problems with G05 media at 8X so far. I don't think I will try it any faster for the G05. I have had teriible results above 8X with G05 but very nice burns at 8X.Saving my Ty02 MIJ for a rainey day! LOL

Sone 16D1 DVD-R (16X, Made In Japan)
Burn Speed 16X
Firmware BSLB

BTW: I have experiement the same thing with four discs burned with BenQ 1640 and all discs have %96 to %97 quality scan.

Strange I have completely opposite results: Look the following:As you can see took NEC 3500 5:51 Minutes to burn a complete disc @ 16X while BenQ took 6:03 Minutes to do the same job.
