Double Layer Media RipOFF !!

I have not been paying much attention lately to meda and burners ( My Pioneer DRV107 still burns like a champion and I have lots of media leftover ), however I was just in my local Toronto Futureshops , Staples, etc and noticed that Dual Layer disks are still selling at $10 per disk on average in packs of 3, unless you buy say a spindle of 15.

I remember discussing this issue many months ago and hearing the usual "Don't worry, double layer media will come down in price as it becomes mainstream". I think we are well past the "mainstream" mark and the media is expensive as ever. The way the past trends have gone, this media should be under a dollar a disk by now, but it is nowhere near this amount.

Reminds me of the 3 pack of 4x mini DVD-R's that I see in the stores for $19. ( I am sure that no one is cleaning up on that sham ).

Hmm looks like that store is still asking a lot of money normal prices are somewhere half of that 10 euro's a disc. Prices are dropping over the months but it's going slow.

It 's not simple 1 Dollar is not a option for a quality dual layer disc at this time and I have some doubts it ever will.

Futureshop is just charging very high prices... ncix.com and blankmedia.ca both have MUCH more competitive prices on DVDRDL media in smaller quantities.

Any chance that there is pressure from various industries to keep the media cost high in order to avoid people making one to one copies of DVD9 Movies ??

As well, I understand the technical reasons why dual Layer media is more difficult to make then single layer, but it has been out for so long now and the price still remains very much the same. Many "Difficult" items to manufacture were very expensive in the begining but came down in price ( ie. 19 inch LCD monitors ).

I paid $2.70 per disc recently for Ritek Double Layer Discs.

Prices seem to be falling...

The industry is changing right now... the average DVDR is now being sold below cost by SOMEONE down the supply lines. In Canada, Futureshop and Bestbuy sell their media (when on sale) at or below cost when shipping is included... and the big brands often sell the media below cost to them in the first place as well, simply because they can't afford to NOT have a certain volume being sold of their product, and all the other big brands are doing it too.... but within the industry, people are hoping that DVDRDL will not turn out as screwed up as DVDRs, so that companies won't start going out of business.

For some reason, people seem to think that margins and profit are really high on blank media products... but on all single layer DVDRs there is almost no money anywhere. So in comparison, a product like DVDRDL where companies are able to sell it NOT below cost still, it makes it seem like a total ripoff to the average consumer.

This is speaking as someone who knows what Futureshop/Bestbuy pay for their DVDRs... and what they sell them at.
