You know, I finally got around to installing QSuite....low and behold it said the defualt of the 1640 for +R and +R DL is not DVD-ROM...I though this drive was automatically set for DVD-ROM? If I change it in QSuite is it permanent until I change it?

Out of the box, it should be set to DVD-ROM for all three formats. I wonder if another application you used changed it.

Yeah, if you change it, the setting should stay.

If you use Nero 6.6 you can select it in the recorder-options.

oh yah...I know you can change it in Nero and all....

I just found it strange that when I queried the drive from QSuite it said +R and +R DL.....I hope no other software can change it....1620 was fine in this respect....no biggee though....just a curiosity

My 1640 retail was not set to DVD-ROM by default out of the box either.

Mine seemed to be DVD-ROM for all of the above out of the box...

My drive came handpicked by BenQ, with a newer firmware loaded on it then what it was manufactured with... so it's possible it was modified for booktype settings at the same time.

Well, I figured it was time to replace my aging NEC ND-2500 (with the ND-2510A firmware). My first pick -- the Pioneer DVR-A09XL -- was with me only a few days before I decided I wanted a drive that was as good as the NEC drive.

So I got me an OEM/bulk BenQ 1640 from NewEgg.com. It arrived today with firmware BSHB. I flashed with BSKB (the TDB RPC1 version). I ran QSuite 2.0 and it told me that the booktype settings were DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL. Definitely easy enough to change, but looks like the bulk versions of the drive may not come set to DVD-ROM by default.

Unless the firmware update resets them?

It might just be as simple as the Retail drives coming with it set automatically, and the OEM drives not. Since my drive was a retail drive, that would make sense.

Well, pchilson said above his retail didn't come set to DVD-ROM either. So maybe that's not it either. The mysteries of the BenQ.... :)

I must say that in the first 12 hours of owning it, I already like it so much better than the Pioneer drive. I need to burn a few dual-layer DVDs, including a Ritek, and see what happens there.
