I'm sick of it!

Every single time I see under lows for DVD burner:

Has a 2048KB buffer
Documentation could be better
Doesn't support the Mt. Rainier format

I get mad. What model does have larger buffer and who cares anyway these days? Even some hard drives come with 2MB buffers and so what?

Who needs documentation for DVD burner? To tell you how to insert DVD or say that if light is flashing your DVD burner is burning DVD.

Mt. Rainier format!? Hello, is anyone listening? Who the hell is using Mt. Rainier anyway. DVD-RAM is also missing but yet that is not a low. And what about Blue Ray compatiibility that always indicates in your tests that is not supported. How about HD-DVD?

Okay, I'll agree with Points 1 and 3, but as for point 2, documentation is still important for people who are new to DVD Burners, and while that isn't you or me, or 99% of the population of this forum.... there really are some first timers that read our reviews here, and we NEED to consider them a potential reader of our reviews too, since they are the ones who will need the most help.

Me mad! Me hulk smash! Sorry.. couldn't resists. :D

While the bulk of the people on forums like this probably don't need a manual, most of the people buying drives at say Best Buy do. Sadly, most of the manuals these days are down right poor due to companies cutting costs or just being lazy. Even experts like yourself could probably appreciate a list of specs or recommended media, right?

As far as Mt. Rainier and buffers go.. that's the opinion of the reviewer. Everyone has their own things they're looking for. Some want to fast load times others want to copy games with their drives. I want a bigger buffer.

I would like to have Mt. Rainier.
So you can decide to go 3 ways.
1 the positive mention it if a drive has it.
2 the negative each time mention it if a drive hasn't it .
3 Do both.

I see the prime value of the reviews as being of a comparative nature.

As none of the numerous DVD writers reviewed has Mt. Ranier functionality, the notation of such has dubious comparative value.

OTH, if and when a DVD writer is introduced in to the marketplace with that functionality, then its notation would be of significant comparative value.

Mt Rainier you say ...
I like to know your opinion about this statement made by alexnoe
about the safety of packet writing:
title: " InCD/DirectCD - warning "
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=53834

« The disc works for some time, and suddenly, without any reason, it is unreadable / recognised as not being formatted »
« There are of course some people who have no problem with packet writing (it had worked for me for about 4 years before making the abovementioned crap suddenly), but the risk of data loss is always present and too high in my opinion »

For these reasons and because of personal bad experience I dont anymore pay any attention to Mt Rainier (it's not native in XP anyway)

After making a backup on a 2nd physical HD I use a method I described here:

Is Mt. Rainier possible on dvd burners? I have yet to see one that supports it. Please list the ones that have.

My old and recently replaced optorite 203 has an 8mb buffer, not sure if its needed or why other drives don't have this much either.

One of the older Plextors did I believe. A few others have advertised it, but the manufacturers never got around to adding it.

One word: money. Drive manufacturers can save a few cents per drive by using a 2MB buffer, letting the CEO buy himself a new car every 6 months. These days though, an 8MB buffer really won't get you much when writing at 16x.
