TY USA wanted to sell (yes sell) me some samples a month or two ago. For what they were charging, I said hell no.

I *ALMOST* said yes.... but since I know the media is going to become more readily available in the not too distant future, I decided it would a bad investment

Sony part number on package is 25DPR47LS4.
purchased at compusa because I wanted to use up a store credit.
printed around hub:"DVD+R Ver. 1.3/1x-16x Sony Corporation"

What's the media ID (MID)?

I'm betting they're SONYD21 and not TY.

thanks for the responses to my question about the Sony media.

Don't know the MID, since I don't have anything installed yet that can read or write to it, unless my Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1712 drive will shed some light. (?)

My brand-new OEM BenQ DW1640 has arrived ( manufactured June 2005), but it could be a few days before I have it installed. My case is maxed out and I just bought a new case, and was planning to install it there with a few other items I've been hoarding.

I would most appreciate if anyone can point me to a thread or other info on how to read the MID, plus I'd like to learn how to read the charts and graphs that are in all the reviews here at the labs. And start doing some of my own graphing, etc. (OK don't laugh too hard, I just want to learn). I have Nero 5.5.10.56 (Yamaha F1) installed currently, and Nero OEM suite 6.3.1.26 which came with the BenQ plus downloaded updates, and Nero OEM 6.6.08. Also have downloaded all the BenQ software stuff, and latest firmware that came out yesterday.

Slightly more on topic, if the media does indeed turn out to be SONYD21, is this stuff any good?

OKay for a biased answer use DVD-identifier located at http://dvdidentifier.cdfreaks.com/. Just install and the thing should be so easy that you could use it withouth much problems. Afterall to supporting it I also should be able to use it.

But you also could use DVDinfopro or NERO CDSPEED.
So any reason to recommend the install of DVD identifier a long with NERO CDSPEED which can test your media with your benq drive. Well fact is that DVD identifier can identify more obscure codes.

plus I'd like to learn how to read the charts and graphs that are in all the reviews here at the labs.

Ask what you want and don't forget to read the ecma standards
http://www.ecma-international.org/publi ... ma-337.htm
for DVD+R
and
http://www.ecma-international.org/publi ... ma-338.htm for DVD-R
and
http://www.ecma-international.org/publi ... ma-267.htm
for dvd-rom
I mean the pdf documents linked on these pages not the small pages were I linked to.

I recommend not usseing 6.6.08 version incombination with +R because that version has been very problematic for me and some friends. It seems to make that the burned DVD+R disc's are quite unreadable on some drives. (And no this isn't because of the bad quality of media or just bad support of a manufacturer. We are talking about Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi, Ritek, CMC Magnetics in this case.)

Slightly more on topic, if the media does indeed turn out to be SONYD21, is this stuff any good?

Well on the asian boards it was higly liked.
In the tests of the german magazine C't ( see the sticky summary topic on this board ) the the media didn't performed that well on some points.
Now this can be related to at which place it was manufactured or it can be a batch variation.
The asian boards have the japanese stuff and C't tested the made in Austria stuff.[/url]

On the 25 spindle of DVD-R 8x "AccuCore" of MID code SONY08D1 that I bought in Germany I can read "Made in TaƮwan" under the code bar

On the spindle of DVD+R 8x code "SONY-D11-000"
the DVD-R 16x code "SONY16D1" -D21" in jewel case
the DVD+R 16x code "SONY-D21-000" in newel case
there is not indication at all of the type "Made in ..."
You can only find the address of Sony in Japan and Austria

It is the same with my last purchase in the TDK brand: these companies do not indicate anymore where the discs are is made and we have to guess or not buy the same anymore ?

finally able to look at this media with my new BenQ DW1640.

Nero identifies it as Sony D21.

Not all esp. not me, I prefer this. This sample was received and burned way back in Feb '05, rescanned today for durability studies. :D

Firmware was an old old initial beta too, I no longer have it anymore.

From what I've seen till today, TYG03 and YUDEN000 T03 stinks (at least on current BenQ 1620/1640 firmwares) @16X.

Well, I've seen some variations in TYG03 media, and a lot of drives really aren't tuned for them yet either.... it's quite disapointing.

Here's some scans of a Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-R (TYG03) burned at 16x on the Pioneer DVR-110D (firmware: 1.17)
