what Halc wrote is the proper definitions of these objects.

what drives actually do/report is another thing.
if a drive/chipset reports as PIE (for instance) something that isn't really PIE, well what can we do ?

According to ECMA publications, DVD specifications define PI error as follows:

"A row of an ECC Block that has at least 1 byte in error constitutes a PI error."

That means the recommended unit of measurement for PIE is row rather than byte, and PIE includes PIF. You may also read:
